  1. Odd problem here. I have Outlook 2007 on two computers, one at work and one at home. At work, I'm using the store email, which is an Ntelos address, and we have Ntelos as our ISP. It works fine there for everything I try. At home I have the same Ntelos address in Outlook so I can check work mail from home. I can receive everything fine at home, but I can not send anything. The only address I can send to is my own. For example: I send to me@ntelos.net from me@ntelos.net and it goes through fine. If I send from me@ntelos.net to any other address I've tried, i.e. Comcast, Gmail, Yahoo. I get an immediate report in my inbox that said the address was undeliverable. No details either. It's like it isn't even trying to send it. These reports seem to be generated by Outlook as they are not your standard returned mail messages from the email server. Any ideas what the problem could be? I've made certain nothing is being blocked via firewall or host file. Thunderbird can handle the same addresses fine.

Check your account settings (may have to hit the more settings button), you may need to set the Outgoing server settings check box for "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication". Set the radio button to "Use same settings as my incoming mail server."

  3. I've tried that with no luck. The test button works fine with current settings. That box is not checked on the work PC and it works fine. I changed the work one to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" and the radio button to "Log onto incoming mail server before sending mail" and it still seems to work here fine. I'll try it at home and see if it helps there. Outlook 2003 on another PC here still has this option disabled and has worked fine for years.

  4. This may be a setting they made on the server level to deny relaying.
Usually, they'll set it up so only emails from a certain IP range can send to the outside world, but can send to the internal domain or IP range.

Can you VPN into your work network, then test Outlook? If it sends while you'ra VPNed in, then that will confirm their setup.

Hosting ISPs do this all the time. It saves them from be added to black lists for spamming.

Does your work have OWA (Outllok Web Access) setup? If so, the 2007 version matched with the new versions of Exchange are pretty slick now.

OK, other things to check would be that you have the right address listed in the Outgoing Mail Server box. Also check the advanced tab on the More Settings dialog and make sure the Outgoing Server port number is the same as the work one, and if the encrypted connection box needs checking.

  6. Checked all settings. They match perfect.

I'm thinking stiltman may have the right idea here. My home ISP is Comcast, where the work one is Ntelos. I had a vague idea that this may be the problem but I've never run into it before myself.

I don't currently have a VPN setup to the work machines. No OWA or even an exchange server for that matter either. We are a 4 person business.

  7. If it's a small setup like that, use Comcast to send and work to recieve.

Just make sure the reply address is set to your work email

Or check to see if the ISP has a simply web based email, something like squirrel would work fine

  8. Yep Ntelos has Squirrel. Thanks for the input.

  9. Call your ISP to see if they have recently moved and renamed its mail servers. e.g., mine used to be mail.myisp.com but now it is mail.enosoft.net. For a short while I was receiving nothing and unable to send via Outlook but Squirrel was fine. I just needed to change the addresses for the account.

  10. It seems unlikely since the work programs all send and receive with no issues. I also pulled the latest server info off the ISP website to make sure it was current. Thankfully Ntelos is pretty good about keeping their info up to date.

  11. Do you have a firewall at home that may be blocking your outbound email?

  12. Complete disabled firewall and plugged directly to the cable connection with no luck. Changed settings at home like I changed them at work and still no luck. Tried the same setup in Opera's email client and the same issue occurs. I think stiltman has the right idea with the IP range.
