Does anybody know of a way to add chapters when burning a movie to a Data Disk?

In what video container/extension? You can add chapters to .divx, .mp4, .mkv but if you just have an avi then it's not possible.

For example using Nero you have the option of burning a data or a DVD disk.
When burning with Nero Vision Express you can add chapters but if you drag an AVI movie file into Nero Express and select DATA Disc you do not have the option of chapters. As this method of burn takes a fraction of time compared to Nero Vision Express (about 3-4 mins for a complete film) this is what i use but it is not covenient if you stop part way through when viewing on a DVD player. It would be nice to have chapters to get back to where you left off.

That's because NeroVision Express is re-encoding your avi as a DVD-video file.

It would be nice but as Baldrick has pointed out, the avi extension does not support chapters. You could try splitting the avi into shorter numbered segments but the audio may go out of sync if it's variable bitrate. With the latter, it's best to split the movie before encoding as avi.

OK guys i have found a way around problem. Take the AVI file and run it through Easy Video Splitter breaking it into as many parts as required and then burn it as a data disk. This enables you select any part of DVD. When running normally there is only a slight pause as the next sector is picked up. This will do until i find a quicker way to do it.This is a lot quicker than converting to a DVD format first using XtoDvd for example and quality and 5.1 sound is kept.

Every Divx capable player I own has the ability to jump to any nominated point in the timeline. Why cut a file into pieces and have it pause every 4 minutes for no real benefit ? If you are talking about music videos or similar then maybe, but a movie ? It's not like it's video tape and you have to fast forward through the file to get to the bit you want.

I am talking about movies downloaded from web and played back on a normal DVD player not DIVX, i am happy with quality on a 47 inch LCD.
I assume you are talking of something different.

If you are playing them on a normal DVD them player then you have to convert them to DVD format, in which case you can just add chapters.

If you are burning them to data DVDs without converting, and watching them as-is, then you have a Divx capable DVD player, and can just jump to whatever time in the file you want.

No i do not my normal DVD players will play Data disks. I have been converting to DVD format for 6 years using Xtodvd or WinAVI (i know you say they are rubbish),however i am happy with results providing the download is good. What i wanted was a faster method. Burning a download direct to a Data Disk is far quicker than converting to DVD format first. However i could not get break points on them. All that i was asking was did anyone know of a way of putting breaks in.

I also burn avi files as data, but I don't need chapter or break points because I can jump to wherever I left off by simply telling the player what point in time to play from. If I have watched half a movie, I can put the disc in the player, select the file and tell it I want to resume from, for example, 47 minutes 30 second. And that's what it does. No need to cut up the file and have it pause constantly as it moves to the next chunk. Check your manual and I bet yours has a similar function somewhere in the menus.

No probs. I am just amazed at how convoluted or obscure some of the things are that people come up with to solve what are usually simple problems. I didn't mean my first comment as an insult, just an observation. As for manuals - I work with a guy who refuses to read them, or search knowledge bases and FAQs. Me - I'm too old for that sort of crap. Everything is too complicated, too poorly designed and too time consuming to just browse through and guess at. I'd rather find the simple answer now and and enjoy, than waste time re-inventing wheels or taking wild potshots.

Mine doesn't, it only has a very jerky fast forward/rewind which often overshoots the point I want to get to. It does however play consecutive XviDs with no break whatsoever. This is great for where a movie has been split into two or more parts.

My Philips 3575 doesn't have any ability to jump to certain times -- at least not to my knowledge. I'll have to go read the Engrish manual, see if it says anything on this.

That would be a neat feature.

Hi Guns1linger, Tried to use time to select as per manual but i find there is no timeline with a data disk, only time run and total time. When i try to enter time it will not permit. OK with a DVD format. So i guess its back to the drawing board.

I must just be lucky. Four different players, all different brands, and all can do it.
