I'm trying to encode a movie that is in the MKV format using AVI2DVD with the CCE SP converter. When I load the movie file in, there's no audio type but I'm able to play the movie without any problems through VLC. I've used GSpot to check out the file and it only shows it's in the MKV container but no audio information or anything else for that matter.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Let me state what I'm trying to do just in case anyone has a better suggestion of program and/or encoders. Just to note, cost is not of a problem. It's a business so everything I need to buy can be expensed out. I just need it to work and be the best thing out to date. I don't care about the learning curve, I'm pretty sure there's something out there where I need to tweak every single setting by hand.

I've searched and read that supposedly CCE-SP is the best encoder to convert AVI, MKV, etc files to DVD as it's one of the fastest yet yields some of if not the best results period. I'm using AVI2DVD because it's supposed to be good along with the encoder. Maybe it's not the most suitable program for me?

Since VLC can play it, it clearly knows what codec was used for the audio. What does VLC say it is (see the stream info menu option)?

There are a couple of things you can do. One is to unwrap and demux, leaving you with two elementary streams. Then you can separately transcode each into a DVD-compliant one, mux, author and burn. Once you take a look at what VLC says the audio is, you can find a suitable audio conversion tool. And indeed, even VLC can perform audio conversion for a limited number of formats.

It's an old program (still in beta) that hasn't been updated in a long time, which means all it's various components are outdated.

That usually denotes a path problem. Give your source a one word name and put it your root. C:/mymovie.mkv.

Get this and see what it says.

Although CCE is all you said the latest versions of HCenc (free) are considered by many to just as good.

I suggest you give this app (free) a try using the included HCenc and see if the results suit you.

It would be best to use ffdshow and Haali splitter. Note you may have to lock in HCenc 2 pass encoding, for on shorter (high bitrate) sources it defaults to QUenc.

The Help File is very complete and the author is very responsive and updates often.
