Hi, newbie here with a question,
Forgive me if I have placed it in the wrong section.

Could someone please tell me if there is a simple utility to set the display aspect ratio of a VOB to 16:9 within the VOB itself rather than in an .IFO file.

I am using a media player to play back just the VOB file itself, it does not read any information from an .IFO file. I am getting the wrong aspect ratio on screen and I thught that checking the setting in the VOB file itself might be the answer.

The original DVD plays back on my widescreen TV with no black bars from both my DVD player and my PS3. Both are set for 16:9 output. The VOB itself plays back via the media player with black bars so I thought it could be the aspect ratio setting within the VOB itself? I think I remember reading that the aspect ratio is coded into both the .IFO file and the VOB file on a DVD?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Lt. Dang

Thanks for that quick and helpful response.

I tried DVDPatcher and it states that the file is already set to an aspect ratio of 16:9 so I must be on the wrong track.

Not sure what to try next really.

Your widescreen TV is 16:9, your PC monitor is most likely 16:10, which will require small black bars to maintain the correct AR on playback

Sorry, I might not have explained myself very well.

I am using a WD TV media player which is hooked up to a Sony 40V3000 LCD via HDMI.

The WD TV plays back the VOB file in letter box mode with horizontal black bars.

On the same TV my DVD player and my PS3 play the original DVD in full screen mode woth no black bars. Both of them and the WD TV are set to 16:9 widescreen mode.

I thought that maybe without the aspect ratio information in the .IFO file on the original DVD the WD TV did not have the correct information from the VOB. But on using the suggested DVDPatch to check the VOB file it is also set up for 16:9.

So I am not sure why the WD TV is not using the correct aspect ratio when playing back using the ripped VOB only.

Probably a bug which needs a firmware fix?

Because VOB files are incomplete, and most good players look for the required playback information in the IFO files. Try using VOB2MPG to extract the video and audio from the VOB file to a standard MPEG file. Then check the aspect ratio with g-spot to confirm it is still 16:9, then play this back

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I have tried this with MPEG Streamclip but it has not helped. Do you think using VOB2MPG produce a better result?
Also, do you know whether VOB2MPG has a batch processing mode if I need to convert a number of files?

I don't believe it batches, but it will produce an identical copy of the video and audio because it doesn't re-encode. It is basically a transfer of container types.
