  1. I'm going to buy a camcorder to film some stuff that I need on my computer, which I will edit on my own.
    High Definition is NOT necessary.

    I don't have a capture card. I don't have Firewire.

Just a regular Windows XP, 3.4 ghz computer with USB ports.

What camcorder technology will make some decent looking movies and is EASY to transfer to PC (considering the things I don't have on my PC)?

    Thanks!

Budget? At what quality? You have two basic choices.

Get a good quality camcorder (e.g. Canon MiniDV) and an IEEE-1394 card (PCI or PC card).

Get a lower quality SD MPeg2 cam that can transfer with proprietary drivers over USB and software that can edit the result.

  3. I actually have a Panasonic Mini-DV camera.

How do I get the tapes onto the PC?

    WITHOUT FIREWIRE.

You *might* be able to use USB to get low resolution (320 x 240 - ish) heavily compressed video.

If you want the best possible quality, you need to use firewire.

If you are happy with lower quality, you can get a cheap, USB based analogue capture system, and use the composite output from the camera.

Of you can hook the camera up to a DVD recorder, record the video and use DVD to transfer it to the PC.

Again, if quality is even remotely important, firewire is your only option.

Itīs USB (altough for DV transfer you connect your camera via firewire cable) and you donīt need an internal firewire card

if you want to use miniDV buy a $20 firewire card and install it. that's how it's done. otherwise don't whine about not being able to transfer it to the computer.
