Rather simple, take your uncompressed avi or MJPEG capture and compress with divx (v6) using Vdub. Set divx to the same resolution, 1280x720, use CQ 3 (constant quality level 3). Will compress in just a few minutes to at least 1/20 the size on average, if not better. At least that's the experience my son is seeing. You'll only need to do a few of them to get the hang of it.

The new divx 7 (I think it's 7...) is h264 and will take significantly longer to encode for slightly better compression. Though I don't think it a VFW codec and so won't be available to Vdub anyway. There's an older and no longer maintained x264vfw which you could try.

However, at the lengths you're talking about - 5 to 10 min clips - I doubt the little extra file size savings would be worth it.
More recently, I've bought a Windows 7 Professional machine with 8Gb RAM, with a i7 860 @ 2.80Ghz processor. I'm using the 3.9.1 drivers and I find that while I can get a picture in Blackmagic Media Express (which I couldn't before until I got the resolution setting right), I can't at all in Virtualdub, just a blank screen. I've tried installing other codecs (following what I read in another thread on here), including now the Klite pack 6.6.6, but to no avail.

Even after installing codecs, no other compression options are coming up in any of the menus, so I don't know what's going wrong here. If I select Blackmagic 8-bit MJPEG Codec, Vdub just crashes.

However, if I was to record in Blackmagic and compress in Vdub, I can't find anything that'll give me a CQ3 setting. I might sound a bit thick with this, but can you give me a step by step guide, please? Ta.

If you can tell me how to record in Vdub, please do as I know it's worked before but I've no idea why I'm getting a black screen here. Thanks.

    dvdfever,

You get the CQ3 setting when you edit the settings of the codec you use in Vdub. For instance if you choose divx/xvid you should see a config(ure) option on the right. You should be able to take care of it there.
    Have a good one,

As far as I know DVDFEVER the only applications you can use to capture the video from the BlackMagic Intensity pro are the media express software provided and I believe some people have managed to capture video using Adobe Premier.

Hi, I'm very late coming back to this and apologies for that, but while I have had success in recording videos from my Xbox 360 to my newish PC, I tried to use Vdub again and can't find a divx/xvid option in the codec screen, and hence, no CQ3 option.

Even if I use the Blackmagic program for Xbox 360 games, I'd still like to use the 'Screen capture' mode in Vdub to record games played on the PC.

Thanks in advance and I will reply sooner next time

Just to be sure you have to have divx or xvid installed in order for vdub to use it.

Depending on which vdub you are using either use video - compression and select it from the list. Or in file - save as at the bottom of the dialog box is the option to change from the default uncompressed rgb option and select divx/xvid from the compression list again.

Thanks. I tried installing both, and xvid is now showing up (but not DiVx) but I can't find a CQ3 option in the settings, nor can I shift the black screen problem.

I'm not sure what cq3 is other than "constant quality level 3" I guess. But I don't know which versions of divx and xvid have which features.

Perhaps if you let us know which version of xvid you installed somebody else would be able to help you out.

    as for the Frames/Sec issue,

I record 720P 60 frames per, and downsameple to WMV-VC1 30 frames per when I encode, you have to make sure the project is set to 60 frames, and edit in 60 frames per then when you change the frames/per.

or in Virtual Dub, Load the AVI and goto , VIDEO, "Convert To | 30 | fps."

I was able to record 720P MJPEG fine on my rig for the last 4 years.
