  1. I have been using visual hub for some time now when I need to send a file to a client who is using a PC. I seem to continually face the problem that converting a file from .mov to .avi is not enough as most of the times the .avi that visual hub creates does not play on PCs. I have read that this is because .avi isn't a codec, it's just a form of file name, so the original file is not truly being converted (or something more tech sounding than that!?).

Does anyone know what to do with visualhub so that the .avi's that it produces are PC compatable, I think it's something to do with the divx codec but I'm not totally sure.

AVI is what is known as a "container format." An avi container can hold video and audio encoded in a variety of different ways (e.g., MPEG1, MPEG2, MP3, etc.), so without knowing what is inside this container, you can't say too much about the video. AVI was developed by Microsoft, so it is certainly something that PCs can generally understand. However, in order to play an avi file, the PC needs to have the proper codecs to decode the audio and video. So, if you have encoded the video inside the avi container in, say, DivX, then the target PC must have the DivX codec installed, or no playback will occur.

So, you either have to make sure that the target computer is set up properly, or you need to encode your video with a codec that is already known to be supported by the target computer.

you need to convert to WMV. then the windows client won't need to install any codecs.
