Hi all new to the forums.

I have been using ffmpegX for a few days now and have been encoding my mkv videos to divix no problem. Yesterday I encoded a video the realizing I set it to 2 channel instead of passthrough. So i set it up again with all the right settings and when I hit the magical encode button, it just says finished with either 0kb or maybe 50mb. I have no idea why this is happening now because I haven't changed anything. Is this a known error. I read someone has a similar issue and could be related to video error. Im quite unsure because it worked with success no problem the first time. I mean ffmpeg is free right, I didnt think I was in trial or anything.

Please post the contents of the logfile (click on blue "i" in Progress pane).

And no, ffmpegx is not free, it's shareware. But there is no time limit, so that's not the problem.

I forgot to mention that this is to be able to stream to xbox 360 with connect360 but im crazy about having 5.1 when streaming. Here is the log. Now after doing a bit of testing I realized it happens when I choose passthrough. The first attempt when I downloaded ffmpeg was this and I would get video in vlc but the audi ould studder. If I took that same file and then stream to my xbox, the video was too fast but the sound was fine. Instead of that I then tired Dolby Ac3 (even though the source file is already ac3) but even in I choose 5:1 it bumps is down to 2 channel, However it encodes the video and I get sound.

I see you used a mencoder preset. Did you also try an ffmpeg preset for this?

No I never really tried it all that much. Is it better or sometimes just either or works?

Edit: I just gave it a whirl. Its automatically changing the video size squeezing it in from the sides to 4:3. and video is set to 1280x536.

Do we hav any idea why the audio could be very jittery using mencoder and passthrough audio?

It's not exactly a question of better; it's really just a matter of "different." Mencoder and ffmpeg have different, er, features. Where one fails, the other might succeed. That's why you're given more than one choice. Try one; if no joy, try the other.

Well i guess that now none is good for me. ffmpeg goes to 4:3 for some reason while mencoder only encodes like 60mb when should be at least 2 or 3gb and says finished. I really have no idea idea where to go from here and why im stressing. I have also tried Visual hub too but there is no chance of ac3 5.1 on it. The onlly time ffmpegx with mencoder works fine is when I select ac3 but like I said it will convert only 2ch which is useless to me. Very strange things happening. I dont know where to pinpoint a solution which is why im asking you fine people to help a brother out.

Am I correct in interpreting your last post to meant that an ffmpeg preset does everything you want correctly, except for the aspect ratio? If that's the only issue, then it may be helpful to note that you may override the dimensions ffmpegx chooses for you. Sometimes, it selects defaults that are wrong (and sometimes the user misinterprets the output as wrong, even though it's actually right). If you are certain that all that remains to be fixed is a simple AR issue, then you should be able to fix that by manually setting it.

What i mean is I enter manually all the info I need to enter. Bitrate, resolution aspect ratio, Ect. So ya, But when encoding something makes it go to 4:3 by itself. Im going to try a few times again see if im missing anything but im really lost. And I still cannot figure out why mencoder wont comply with the ac3 passthrough.

Going back for a minuite to post #3 log file, does this have importance?

Let me make sure that Im not bothering myself for no reason. ffmpeg can encode divx with ac3 to play perfectly on xbox360? lol

Here is the log using divx avi (ffmpeg) I quit a couple mins into it. About 4%. Enough to have a look see and of course 4:3

i have been trying all day with this one. Even downloaded another mkv to try but still same problem. Im guessing ac3 5.1 isnt support. Too many duplicate frames. It says too many packets in buffer. Anyone got any other solutions. Doesnt even have to be ffmpeg. I lost for direction here.

You could extract the ac3 audio from the source file.
You could extract just the video out of the converted output file.
Then you could mux the video and audio to a new AVI file.

Someone else should point you to the tools for that, because I don't do this very often, and never done it with HD material.

Yeah I tired extracting them didnt work out in the end. I tried another file last night with ffmpeg instead of encoder. Seemed to work well however. No sound in Quicktime and like 3 seconds on vlc if I hit pause then play it does it for another 3 seconds but mediainfo says its 5.1. Really confused why the other is giving me problems.

Just tried that file on my xbox, No sound at all

Here is the mediainfo file of that movie.

What did you use in your extraction attempt? Mkvtoolnix's mkvextract? That should have worked if the source files were compliant with the (ever-evolving) mkv specs. If you tried this tool and it did not work, then you are likely SOL.

As an act of desperation, you could try the transcoding feature of VLC. If VLC can play it, then you have a fighting chance of transcoding with it. Just be advised that this feature is not well-developed in VLC (as the authors themselves inform us), and so do not be surprised if it's buggy. However, I have had more than occasional success with VLC when all other approaches have failed.

I tried mkvtools and it was fine to extract but bring it back in again to ffmpegx all I got was duplicate frames and too many packets in audio buffer.

Im going to check out vlc's transcoding method. Didnt even know it has it. thanks.
