i just got a new 47" lcd tv with a vga input. i do a lot of 1080p video editing and would like to use this as a monitor. the tv accepts a lot of inputs, specifically 1920x1080 at 60 hertz. when i first hooked up my laptop, it displayed great, but was at 1280x800 resolution. i went to control panel and set it to 1920x1080, and it looked great. after that, i went to dell.com to see if there was an upgrade to my video card drivers, to see if there was any adjustments i could make. i installed the ATI catalyst control center along with a new driver. when i restarted and hooked up the vga cable, the laptop screen went blank for a few seconds, then came back at 800x600 resolution, as was the tv. i went to change the laptop screen back to normal. after that i tried to change the tv back to 1080, but it wasnt an option, only 800x600 and 768. i tried restarting and still wouldnt work.
so then i used windows restore to go back to where i was earlier when it worked. this time, when i hooked up the cable, all the resolutions were available including 1920x1080. but when i clicked that and then hit apply, nothing happened. i restarted again and still nothing. everytime i hit the 1080 resolution and hit apply, nothing happens. i tried reinstalling the newer driver and it wont change anything.

What is the model of the TV? Does the manual say 1920x1080 is supported on the VGA input?
Are you certain your Dell display chipset supports 1920x1080 out?
You may find 1920x1080 chokes your laptop. Instead consider an altenative 16:9 square pixel resolution such as
1366x768 (~70% H and V) or 960x540 (quarter size)Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

tv is a vizio 47" xvt, computer is a dell vostro with an ati 1150 video card. the tv supports 1080 as stated in the manual. and like i said, when i first hooked it up my laptop was fine outputting 1080 and the tv displayed it correctly. only after updating the drivers and installing ati's control center did i have a problem.

well i emailed ATI and they said to contact dell. ive chatted with dell and talked on the phone and cant fix this.
in the meantime, i tried to watch a high-def video on my display, and the output is very choppy, almost like there isnt enough cpu power to display this. even though if i watch the video on the laptop screen it plays back perfectly. does ouputting through vga use more cpu or gpu? -

You could also try downgrading your drivers. Either directly from ATI or get the latest release from Dell (which is likely several versions old anyway). It's not uncommon for new versions to create issues the old drivers didn't have.

ok so after another long chat with dell, they told me my video card is not capable of displaying 1920x1080, even though, like i said, when i first plugged it in it was defintely working at that resolution.

What's your video card?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
its a raedon xpress 1150. like i said, i was able to select 1080 resolution at first. but after upgrading the drivers i couldnt select it. the other day i actually did a system restore to a few weeks ago to clear out everything. then i wasnt even able to select 1280x720 resolution. so i found an older driver on google and installed that. worked fine til i restarted the computer, then again i couldnt select 720. so i tried using the 'driver roll back' option in device manager. everything seems to be working fine now (using 1280x720 of course).
i guess ill live with it, but i would love to have 1080 output so i can use my blu-ray drive as a player for my tv. -
Specific Laptop Model?
Resolutions are in hardware from original purchase.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

That model has an integrated ATI R485M display chipset.
They don't list output resolutions but display memory is very small unless you upgrade.
The screen resolution is WXGA or 1366x768. That is probably your limit.
