What's the best format DivX or Xvid I can get?

Would this for example be an avi file that has 720p in its name?
I've seen these and have in the past downloaded
But I haven't been able to get these to play on my normal Divx player

    Thanks

The files you have are high definition and will not play on many dvd player with divx support. You will need to find a player that supports high defintion play back. There are terms for the various profiles but I cant find them.

    some options
    Buy new dvd player

Computer playback (can connect computer to television)

reencode (AVIrecomp is made for this purpose)

so i should just watch out for 720p files?
is it possible to get avi rips that are 1080p?
    thanks

1080p yes they exist but may not be in divix or xvid. Possibly x264/H.264.

I don't know about best quality resolution is not the only factor.

  5. And your blu-ray player may not play them. Just because it plays Blu-ray discs at 1920x1080 doesn't mean it can play Divx/Xvid at that resolution.

Also even though blu-ray supports H.264 they may need to be authored or encoded with specific settings.

Many folks were able to get these Blu-Ray rips on standard DVDs playable in their Blu-Ray players.. It was known as BD-5 and 9. But it seems that Sony wasn't too thrilled with this and the latest firmwares have made this much, much tougher. But as is usually the case where there is a will, there will be a way.

The AVS forum is a good place to follow such discussions.

    They use h.264, not Divx/Xvid.
