Hi All,
I have been using mkv2vob in order to convert mkv files to vobs with the aim of playing them on my PS3.
Sometimes, converting a DVD5-sized mkv to vob keeps the filesize within DVD5 limits but the majority of the time 200-300mb are added to the VOB file after conversion making it impossible to burn onto a DVD5.
Does anyone know of a way to reduce the filesize of a single VOB file - I have tried DVD Shrink but that won't recognise the file - or propose another way to convert the mkv's in order to keep them within DVD5 limits.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.
I tried to add the VOB file to DVD Shrink in reauthor mode but couldn't get that to work - you couldn't outline the method could you? -
I have DVD Shrink open at the moment, in reauthor mode, I have navigated to the folder containing the VOB file but DVD Shrink doesn't see it??

To add, when I try to direct DVD Shrink to the folder that contains my single VOB file in order to open it, I am confronted with a message that there is no .IFO file contained.
Since MKV2VOB only creates a single VOB file with no IFO I'm not sure what I should be doing in order to get it to load in DVD Shrink. I tried to create my own IFO file but IFOEdit wouldn't recognise the VOB either. -
DVD Shrink does not transcode H.264 and ONLY works with MPEG-2 video. You should demux the mkv, transcode the video and/or audio to reduce their size, remux to a new MKV, and THEN use mkv2vob.

You need to load the entire dvd that was created using mkv2vob in dvdshrink first.
Then click reauthor mode.
Drag main title from left to right in next screen
Now I bet there are no chapter points, so to create
Click "start/end" button up top
New box, check start frame, then lower, check end frame (normally last frame of a scene)
Now you title size changes (what you left off is deducted from main title)
Click backup (output to folder A)
----
Now repeat process from scratch, only this time you will be saving the remainder of the main title that was not included in the first edit ... this goes to folder B ... this is where you also include the requant compression, so don't forget the 200 - 300mb's
----
Now stitching these together wont work in dvdshrink but use Simple DVD Creator, it will treat as individual titles and play consecutively.

Having just noticed , did you read what mkv2vob actually dose ...
A program which will remux mkv with x264 video and AC3 audio to a vob file which is playable on the sony ps3 ... tis no good for what you need.
So its the video side your actually jammed up with and need to convert it properly .
Avi2Dvd > http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.php?b2=1 should have you up and running -

Or you may simply prefer an easy to use solution over a manual one that might give you more control over the process and more predictable results. You might try the ConvertXtoDVD program. It's not free, but many like it and I think it might give you better results than the hit or miss mkv2vob program. -
Thanks for replies guys, the mkv files are HD TV episodes that I am receiving from a friend at work. I take them directly from his laptop onto my external hard drive in order to then burn them to a PS3 compliant format once I get home. This is where I get stuck because of the increase in filesize once converted to a PS3-playable VOB file.
Would ConvertXtoDVD allow me to compress the VOB file? I don't mind spending the money in order to attain the ability to fit the files onto single DVD's (without burning a 4.8gb file onto a DVD9!!!! That'd be such a waste!).
TIA.
