I initially started putting subtitles on video files about a month ago and, at the time, I was downloading quite a few little programs that were recommended to me. Trouble is I can't remember which one I ended up using for subtitles, VirtualDubMod or AVI ReComp.

I started out today with AVI ReComp and it was set on Direct Stream, but right after I clicked on "Open Video file" in the file menu I received an error message that said "Couldn't load decompressor for format 'DX50'unknown. VirtualDub requires a video for Windows (VFW) compatable codec to decompress video.DirectShow Codecs such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.Only Direct Stream Copy is available for this video.

So after I got that, I aborted and cranked up AVI ReComp. I loaded the video file and the subtitle fine, then I went to Queue and Add to Queue and it did start processing. However when I tried to enable preview before I started the process and after, both times it shut down the program and the project.

That error means you are missing a Divx compatible (DX50) codec. I don't know if that relates to the second program problem, but it's likely if you were trying to preview and you didn't have a compatible codec loaded.

    Hi redwudz,

Thanks as always for your help. So your saying that it was searching for the DivX codec but couldn't find it? I do, or at least I thought I had DivX installed. Maybe it's corrupted though.

I ended up solving my problem on my own after all. It was AVI ReComp that I was using for subtitles a month ago, though I can't remember if I ever tried VirtualDubMod for that or not also. It does embed subtitles also, does it not?

Once I opened up AVI ReComp it prompted me for an upgrade anyway so I went ahead and reinstalled it and all of the programs it recommends. I was then able to embed a subtitle while watching a preview, just fine.

This does bring up a question I have about AVU ReComp. Do you need to install every one of those other programs that it wants you to install? I'm assuming that the answer is yes in that it's successful operation is tied into those other programs, correct?

From their site, it apparently installs: VirtualDubMod, AviSynth and XviD. The XviD install would take care of your DX50 codec missing. AVI ReComp is a front end for those programs. AVISynth is a very powerful video program, but it's also a command line program, so it needs a GUI to make it easier to use. VD(M) can embed subs, with the proper filters (Plugins) installed.
