I am trying to reduce the size of some tv episodes in HDXviD avi files so they will play on an Oppo DV 970 HD player (I believe this uses a Mediatek 1389 chipset).

From what I have read AVI ReComp seems like a good tool and handles resolution changes easily. Is it possible to set the video bitrate? I cannot find any means of setting it. Is it somehow related to the avi output file size? If so does someone know the relationship?

    Thanks, John.

AVI Recomp will ensure that your video doesn't go above the bitrates handles by the lowest common denominator hardware players. However if you want know more accurately what bitrates you will be getting, use vcalc. Enter the running time of the video, set the audio bitrate, then drop in the target size. It will tell you the video bitrate required, which is going to be pretty damn close to what AVI Recomp uses.

Thanks guns1inger, AVI Recomp works perfectly and thanks for the vcalc link, it allows that extra bit of control for a relative newbie.
