  1. Hey there guys. I've had a Pioneer Dual Layer 110D for a few years now. It's always been fine. But I recently got a new PC and all of a sudden I'm having issues with some of my backup software. I'm getting lots of retries, failed attempts, and a couple of game backups which worked flawlessly in the past are burning with issues. Perhaps I have my settings on this software wrong on the new tower (and I'd rather not mention them in case they shouldn't be brought up) but I'm thinking hardware must be the problem because all other variables are the same. No, media is not the problem. I'm all over that. Also, the drive is in an external enclosure and isn't seen by DISCinfo.

If you think I should just be getting a new burner now, please recommend a DL internal SATA drive that I can get which can be flashed to be region free, is of the best quality, and will have no problem burning discs through any backup software.

Thanks to you all for any help!!

If you are absolutely sure the media isn't the problem, then maybe the burner is failing. I would try cleaning the laser lens before I trash it. But if you are looking for SATA burners, Pioneer is still a good choice. Samsung also.

    And welcome to our forums.

  3. Thank you very very much. I will be more specific with my posts.

Are you able to answer which Pioneer drive might be flashable for multi-region like the 110 was? Or is that question off limits? Don't want to get anyone in trouble.

No problem with the question, though I don't know the answer. Someone here probably does, or check out CD Freaks as they have a lot of information on DVD drives: http://club.cdfreaks.com/

  5. The interaction between host computer, backup software and burner can sometimes be tricky to troubleshoot. In your case, if your Pio 110 was heavily used for backups, it may just be coincidence that it has finally worn out at the same time you plugged it into a new PC. One random issue with the Pio 110 is simply that its an "even number" model: until recently, Pioneer had an peculiar pattern where the "even number" burners were way twitchy and the "odd number" burners were were more stable, compatible and bug-free (i.e. the 107, 109 and 111 were a lot better than the 108, 110 and 112). You'd do well to follow redwudz suggestion to search the CDfreaks forum, they explore burner issues in great depth (although a number of burner experts here will likely chime in over the next few days with good advice). The combination of persnickety DVR-110, external USB case and your new PC motherboard might simply be incompatible: if your new PC can accept internal EIDE drives, you could remove your 110 from its USB enclosure and see if it works better installed directly in the PC case. If your old PC was running XP, and your new one is running Vista, the old burner/USB enclosure may not be completely Vista-approved. Etc, etc.

BTW, the "odd/even" pattern seemed to stop after some weird problems surfaced on the Pioneer 112, causing a recall. Newer Pioneers with model numbers above 112 have so far proved more consistent and are quite good overall. Considering how cheap a burner is nowadays, it can't hurt to try a new one if your old one starts flaking.

I had no idea. I was always under the impression that the 110D was one of the best internal DVD burners you could buy.

It only has SATA and has left me in a bind with all my EIDE drives. Outside of replacing the power supply, I'm stuck with what I've got for connectors and regretting more and more every day not having built my own system which I always swore I would do. Regardless, without getting off topic, that's the reason for the enclosure. It was my only choice. But given how much easier a SATA internal would make things, I'm thinking I'll just find out what the best drive is that has RPC1 firmware available, burns as flawlessly as possible, and covers the most types of media.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'd still appreciate any further suggestions.

I cannot fully agree. 107 was a non DL animal, but good. 108 and 109 were not thatgood, but 110 and 111 kicked and still kickin here. 112 was half / half and 115 and 116 straight to the top again.

Because you have got a new pc with a new mobo, I think these issues are more controller related.
What is the atapi/ide controller on the new mobo and how is it set up?

post your motherboard brand/model. if your mobo has a nvidia sata chipset controller you'll need to download the latest drivers from the nvidia website in order for a SATA dvd burner to work correctly. if your mobo has intel ICH 7/8/9/10 sata chipset controller a SATA dvd burner will work fine. the via chipset controllers will not work with SATA dvd burners. you'd have to use a PCI SATA controller card that uses the SILICON IMAGE 3114, 3512 or 3124 chipset.
earlier versions of JMICRON sata controller chipsets also don't work with SATA dvd burners. but i have read that the latest JMICRON chipsets may work, it depends on the mobo model and make. also you'll have to disable RAID in the mobo bios and set SATA to IDE in order for a SATA DVD burner to work correctly.

my suggestion if you have the right mobo sata controllers is to buy a PIONEER 216 SATA dvd burner.

  10. Computer Brand Name: Gateway ET1161-03 (it's an emachines)
    Motherboard Model: ECS MCP61PM-GM
    Motherboard Chipset: nVidia nForce 6100-430

And this is the drive that's in there now. It's a SATA drive.
    Drive Model: INULO W5IVS5UBGDA3

I just wanna be able to flash a new SATA drive with RPC1 firmware. So, if you give me some opinions about the Pioneer 216 or the Optiarc AD-7200S, that would be great.

you have the a nvidia chipset mobo. go to the nvidia website and download the latest sata controller drivers. don't use the mobo website, it has to be the nvidia website.

are you using a 80 wire ide cable for you PIONEER 110 drive? ide cables can fail so buy a new 80 wire ide cable and try that route first. if that doesn't work then your PIONEER 110 drive could just be dying a slow death. buy a new dvd burner which is so cheap these days. also try using VERBATIM DVD+R media. some VERBATIM DVD-R could be crappy as they had a batch months ago that had problems.

as for flashing a sata drive with a RPC1 firmware it's not difficult. you can just use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT to make it region free. do a google search on MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT or go to the TOOLS section here to find it.

Here are some links at Newegg .... in case you decide to get a new burner .... I do like Lite-On ... I have a few of them and none of them have been duds ... I have been buying them over last few years.

Actually ... I have not had a DVD Burner die on me yet ... I do burn DVDs quite often but 3 PCs in my home ... that I use ... has two burners in them.

On one PC ... one of the two burners sits on top thru a USB connection. Oh ... I forgot there is a USB Pioneer 109 sitting next to the other PC. Total burners in use ... 8 of them connected and being used.

On the PC in my garage ... two inside my machine and another USB burner [Plextor] sitting on the table ... I also have a few Panasonic DVD Burners ... 3 of them. I guess because I have so many of them ... the wear and tear is spread out among all of them.

    tinpanalley,

When you're burning something, it's actually accomplished through a series of steps that require a continuing conversation between the burning software and the drive.

In the burn log you posted:
The semaphore timeout period has expired
means the drive stopped talking to (communicating with) the software.
Power On, Reset, or Bus Device Reset Occurred
means the drive reset to correct the error condition. Once that happens, the burning can't continue and that particular disk becomes a coaster.

You should check all the connections to the drive inside the external enclosure, and the enclosure's usb cable's connections on both ends. If that doesn't fix the problem, try a different usb cable. Also try connecting any other external device to that usb connector on the computer to see if that's the problem.

    Still doesn't work?
When the drive in question worked before, was it internal, in the same external enclosure as it is now, or in a different enclosure?

If the answer is either "internal" or "in a different enclosure", the prime suspect is you're currently using a faulty enclosure.
If the answer is "in the same external enclosure", it's more difficult to diagnose. It could be the drive failing, the enclosure failing, or the usb on the new computer has a problem.

On a separate note, having absolutely nothing to do with your current problem, the burn log shows you asked for 2.4x burning speed, but the drive only has 4x, 6x, and 8x write strategies for that media, so it went with the 4x write strategy. It isn't going to hurt anything to ask for 2.4x, but you're never going to get it, so there isn't much point in asking for it.

  15. Hey all. Thank you for the continued help. I've replaced the EIDE ribbon cable in the enclosure. I'm guessing the only way to test it is by burning another disc, huh? If there's some other test I can do please let me know. I've got enough coasters.

VegasBud, thanks for all the help and suggestions. The drive used to be inside my tower hooked up via Molex power and IDE cable. Unfortunately, not an option in the new tower. I doubt that it's the enclosure because I trust the products sold here at B&H in New York and having had enclosures before, this is a substantial product. But, it very well could be and I'll find out by process of elimination.

Consequently, someone over at CDfreaks told me that I should run chkdsk /f /r /x on the harddrive that contains the data because that error means it's having trouble reading. Well chkdsk found no problems so that was fruitless.

Anyway, I guess I'll post back when I've tried another burn.

  16. Another burn, same problems.
Also, DVD Decrypter doesn't even seem to want to see the drive at all. Only lists my internal drive.

    tinpanalley,

The bad news is you have the same problem...the worse news is now the burn log is showing that when it was setting up, ImgBurn tried to use the default SPTI, aborted, tried ASPI as an alternate, aborted that, went back to SPTI, and finally managed to get to the point where it failed the same way as before.

I still suspect the enclosure, but other things to check would include:
If the enclosure is connected through a usb hub, try eliminating the hub.
Are there any warnings in Device Manager for the usb controller or the drive-in-the-enclosure?

The burn logs are consistently showing a break down in communication specifically between the software and the burner. I wouldn't waste time on anything (like running chkdsk) that doesn't involve the connection chain between the burner (which is very likely still fine) and the software (which is not the problem).

If anything else occurs to me, I'll certainly let you know.

  18. Hey,

The SPTI, ASPI thing was me messing around with settings. I'm thinking that for the benefit of SATA and for the benefit of not having an enclosure dangling off my computer, and with prices being so low on burners, I'll just cave and get either the Optiarc AD-7200S or the Pioneer 216. I wanted to solve this cause I'm a tech-geek and wanted to beat it, but it's becoming more trouble than the solution which is so cheap.

    What do you think?

Can you test the burner internally?

I bet it works, but usb sucks.
*** Now that you have read me, do some other things. ***

  20. Just so you guys can take a look... this is what happens when I try to burn with the internal SATA drive with IMGburn.
    Same image file as before.

    What the hell??

    tinpanalley,

Wow...that's really impressive...in a horrendous sort of way.

I guess we should start with what the reported errors were:
    Reason: Unknown (0x67, 0x00)
    is a configuration error.
    Reason: CD Control Error
is actually supposed to be a media error, but with MCC 02RG20 media, that's really not likely.
    Reason: No Additional Sense Information
means either the drive didn't report what the error is, or (more likely) the error code the drive reported was lost before it got back to the software, which would be back to some kind of communication error.

With the information available, I'm starting to think there's some unidentified problem in a controller or its' driver. If you go into Device Manager, are there any problems being reported...of any kind? If so, what are they?

The only other thing I can think of that you could try would be to generate a debug burn log, where I can step through the detailed conversation between the software and the drive, hopefully to see more exactly what is going on. I've got to warn you that since I don't have a lot a free time, it could take a few days to report back to you. If you're willing to give it a shot, so am I. If you're interested, follow the steps below.

    1) Start ImgBurn
1a) Use "Test Mode" to do a simulated burn. There's no reason to waste any more media.
    2) Press the F6 key to turn on debug mode
    3) Proceed as normal
    4) Post the debug burn log

  22. Hey Vegas,
    Thanks again...

    1. I tried what you mentioned, but I couldn't seem to get Test Mode to work. Do I have to have a disc in the drive?

    2. I bought this last night because I'm starting to get sick of trying to force EIDE to work when I have an empty drive bay that my computer will probably work with. Although now, even the one in my tower isn't working through IMGburn and Decrypter. I think this problem may have occurred after I upgraded my mobo's SATA controllers but the drive never burned through those programs to be honest.

    tinpanalley,

Yes, you need to have a blank disk in the drive for test mode to work. Make sure it's a -R disk, and nothing will be written to the disk, so you can use the disk in the future. If it's a +R disk, even though it's in test mode, it still results in a full burn...and another coaster.

I was actually stopping by to let you know that by putting
    Code:
    site:imgburn.com nvidia nforce
into google, there were 90 some hits for people having assorted problems with nvidia drivers for nvidia sata controllers. Some of those reported problems sounded similiar to your last burn log. LightningUK! says the next version of ImgBurn has a workaround for nvidia driver issues, but that version hasn't been released yet. You might want to take a look at some of the threads there to see how other people are dealing with the (maybe related) problem.

    tinpanalley,

I appreciate the effort, but neither log provided any new useful information.

Since you have a internal sata burner installed, you would be better off getting it to work. In that case, the problem is the software and the burner don't appear to be communicating correctly, which indicates a problem with the cable you're using, the sata controller or its' driver. Have you tried rolling back the sata controller driver in device manager?

  27. 1. When I try to roll back the driver for the sata controller, it says there is nothing to roll back to.
    2. I've never touched the drive's cables inside the tower.
    3. I can't find drivers for this internal drive ANYwhere, much less updated ones. I'm glad I have that Pioneer on its way because this is becoming frustrating.
    4. I don't know where to get new SATA controller drivers from. I don't see that on the nvidia site.

Make sure your DISABLE RAID & set SATA to IDE within the mobo BIOS. If this isn't done the SATA dvd burner will NOT WORK CORRECTLY.

Another option would be buying a PCI SATA CONTROLLER CARD that uses the SILICON IMAGE 3114, 3512 CHIPSET for your NVIDIA chipset motherboard.

What is your NVIDIA chipset? NFORCE series 4, 5, 6, 7??????

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.23.html

You would just install the SATAIDE Driver (v10.3.0.42) WHQL

  29. - What is your NVIDIA chipset? NFORCE series 4, 5, 6, 7??????
    GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

    - Make sure your DISABLE RAID & set SATA to IDE within the mobo BIOS.
Don't know how to do that. Will do research.

Don't know what this means or why this matters. Why would my CPU need a new SATA PCI card if it was sold the way it currently is with SATA ports on the motherboard? Not understanding that.

    Thanks again!
