    Are these the same codec? HD-DVD seems to use VC-1 and BluRay seems to use AVC. I've remuxed HD-DVD to BluRay and my Sony player has no problem playing these VC-1 conversions.

    Not same but similar. Both hd-dvd and blu-ray supports vc-1. www.videohelp.com/hd#tech
