    Does anyone know how you tell whether a DVD has been created from a VCD source?

    Resolution would be the first sign. If it is VCD resolution then it certainly isn't studio sourced, and probably originated as a VCD.

    U talking about a bought DVD or some DVD-R u got?

    I do actually have a hitchcock DVD (early movie from 1936) that definetaly looks as it has been copied stright from a VCD or even VHS tape. I bought it at a local supermarket so it is certainly legit.

    Well, if it has a resolution of 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL) and is MPEG-1 video, I'd say it was created from a VCD source. Of course someone either deliberately or through ignorance could take a VCD source and re-encode to MPEG-2 and possibly attempt to re-size it upward to hide this. I'd expect very poor quality from that. The presence of a lot of macroblocks during fast motion might also suggest a VCD source.
