I have a few problematic discs ive just recieved from a friend, they all play perfectly well on my standalone DVD player and also on my computer. I have issues when converting the vobs to mpeg2 for editing. Generally I use Womble Mpeg Wizard DVD for much of my editing, but when i import the dvd files, it comes up short so to speak, the playing length of the DVD is say 1h31m08 when played in VLC or MPC but when imported to WMWDVD it come up as 1h28m01 or similar. So i tried vobedit to demux the dvd first, this worked fine and files are playable, but when it comes to remuxing them with either WMWDVD or TMPGEnc the .m2v file causes problems and the programs fail.
The discs are all Verbatim and in as good condition possible. Most work fine but there are 4 with identical faults.
So basically i looking for a good way to get my DVDs to mpg avoiding these problems.

    Yours hopefully

Have you considered using vob2mpg to convert the DVD to mpeg files? I also use womble mpeg video wizard dvd, but also run ripped dvds through vob2mpg first so I can work with each mpeg file individually, instead of the arbitrary 1 gb chuncks created during authoring.

Also, can you tell what was removed? I wonder if it's a frame rate kind of thing.

    557953,

I have had similar problems as well with ripped DVDs. I find that sometimes when I "scroll" through the file in Womble, it will "jump" from, say 00:02:00 to 01:02:00. I have always been able to find a solution, but it seems like the solution depends on the DVD. Here are things I have tried:

    1) VideoReDo has a tool called "QuickStream Fix". This sometimes fixes the problem. VideoReDo is not free, but they might have a 30 day trial you can get. I did that, discovered it fixed my problem, so paid for the software.

    2) Probably most of my problem are fixed by demuxing the VOB (or mpg) file and then remuxing using Womble's tools. This is important, since Womble has spent a lot of time fixing A/V sync problems caused from time code jumps in the VOB files, and the demux/mux tool fixes these problems. All demuxers and muxers are not created equal! If you use Womble, you don't have to remux the pieces back together again; just put the video on one track and the audio on the other.

    3) Sometimes the problem can be fixed by skipping the first chapter when ripping the file onto your hard drive. For example, I use DVDdecrypter and the problem is sometimes in the first microsecond of the movie (I have no idea why). So skipping the first chapter fixes the problem. I then rip the first chapter separately.

    4) If I can't solve the problem, I send the problem to Womble support. At this point, they have always been able to find a fix for me (and believe me, I have sent them plenty of problems). The fix always shows up in their next release too. However, be warned, if it is a tough problem, be prepared to wait a while.

Well, maybe one of these suggestions will help.
