  1. Hi there,

Background: I have captured all our old VHS-Tapes for my little ones. I bought a Popcorn Hour Mediaplayer HDD to get rid of the VHS-Tapes and scratched DVDs flying around in the room.
I captured the films (mostly cartoons ) and have no problem to filter them with VirtualDub.

But and want to build MKVs (H264 with AC3 DD2.0 or AAC whatever) to keep file size small.
I have Pinnacle Studio 11 but authoring a DVD with it has the problem, that Pinnacle is far to stupid of giving me the option of choosing filesize/quality, doesnt smartrender vbr-material right and renders even to small if I choose DVD9 (calc-graphic says 39mins left, Button Encode says capacity exeeded even if it can't be.

I would like to have some tool wich can do 2pass VBR rendering with Constant Quality like TMPEG can.
Is there a tool/gui for H264 wich has this encoding option?

Lastly I need a structure with chapters because fast forwarding the whole movie is not only time consuming / unhealthy for the harddisc - the biggest problem is, if my little son uses a moment of abstraction and catches the remote control for pressing buttons....
    I dont'need a Menu, only Chapters!

    Thanks in advance.

    PS:
I didn't exactly know under wich topic to post this. Please feel free to move it where you desire it best.

    By the way:
Can somebody post a link to something like a list of encoding "profiles" x264-Best bitrates for VCD/SVCD/DVD/Blueray for 100%Quality/good/medium and so on? I am only familiar with bitrates for MPEG 1+2 (1150KB/s, 8500KB/s)

Convert using Xvid4psp! And add chapters to your mkv using mkvtoolnix.

  4. Hi again,

In the process of "growing floor space" I found out, that all the homevideo dvds can also rest at the loft or basement.
But I discovered a little problem.
Xvid4psp works fine for shrinking a single file.
But how can complete VIDEO_TS folders be shrinked with all structures, just to x264 for less space consumption?
When I click on "DVD", I can only select one video and one audio track and I wouldn't like to have done all the work (and shouting at studio) with menues, bonus chapters and so on for nothing.
Is there even a tool which can do that?
Do I perhaps only have to choose another container format than MKV?

Oh by the way, what are these profiles for? (2, 2.1, 4, 4.1, 4.2 etc.) How do they differ? Are they documented anywhere? (all Greek to me )
Till now I chose x264 Q21.0 (profile4.1) with customisation of ME to UltraHigh. Audio to "AC3 192kbps" (for vhs captures) or "Copy" for DVD-AC3.
