I'm thinking about buying a Blu-Ray burner, but I'm confused about the size of the movie in the primary m2ts file. I've looked at a bunch disks and they all seem to be dual-layer,30-40GB's.
I looked at Men In Black for example the main m2ts reads as 27.2GB's,but when I remux it into movie only with just the primary audio stream it drops to 17.4Gb's. That seems like a huge difference. Is this typical?
My concern is that most movie only backups would fit on a single layer BD-R,dual-layer disks are simply too expensive.

Seems to make sense there. The extra size on one disc probably makes bonus material possible on one disc instead of a second disc.

It's probably like dvds are now - if you have a relatively low bitrate movie or short in duration film you can fit more bonus stuff on one disc. than you don't need two discs in the set.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Some movies are spread out over several m2ts files (Simpsons) so there's no way of knowing if the largest of the m2ts files is the whole movie or part of it.

Added to which, even if the largest m2ts file is the whole movie there's no way of knowing how much of the file size is for audio tracks and subs you don't need.

What you need to do is look at the disk with BDInfo then load the mpls file for the main movie into TSMuxer then take out the streams you don't need then mux to a new m2ts file for the main movie.

My concern is that most movie only backups would fit on a single layer BD-R,dual-layer disks are simply too expensive.
Rip to HD and buy a BD-RE for when you want to watch.

rhegedus - your post was very informative and I am currently performing the process you detailed as I type this message. One question I do have is if there is any way to see the size of the file after you have loaded the .mpls file and have removed the streams you don't need. I'm brand new to the remox process and am not sure what to expect once it finishes. Thanks!

    Poor choice of words.

Usually the warez crowd are the only ones referring to "breaking into the scene". It makes you sound like a torrent ripper.

Ok, thanks. Edited as required... I don't even know what a torrent ripper is, but ok.

    Not that I'm aware of.

BDInfo will give an estimate of the total size before remuxing, so the output will be less.

On seamless branching discs (like The Simsons) use BD Edit, or BD Info to find the playlists, the top playlist is usually the correct playlist and you can see the running time, load that playlist into TSMuxer to join the movie into a single .m2ts file in a BD structure

For those that didn't know the latest verion of TsMuxer (1.8.18 ) will rip and demux on the fly from the disc by loading the playlist into the same window you usually put the largest .m2ts file so there is no need to rip w/ AnyDVD HD first

important: only use the latest verion of TsMuxer (1.8.18 ) so as to not bug up your HD audio tracks, even if you only save the core audio it will still be bugged using the old versions, and only PowerDVD will play them because it is tolerant of the flawed track and you won't realize it till you try to play it w/ another player or process it thru any other program (they won't recognize it)

I am now in the process of reencoding my remuxed movie only folders to BD-9 (DL-DVD) w/ BD Rebuilder, on my new AMD Phenom II 940 @ 3.5Ghz I shrink a 30GB+ movie to 7.5GB @ the HIGHEST quality settings in 7hrs

the resulting file is indistinguishable from the original on my 56"

btw some of the most knowlegable blu ray guys are in the Slysoft AnyDVD HD forum

for those just wanting to know what movies will fit w/o reencoding

All movie only, 1 core 5.1 audio track (pref DTS) no subtitles

note: these are folders NOT ISO's (but shouldn't be any difference in size)

  11. Hey bluerayer's.....,
startin' up the blueray burnin' and just want to know (if anyone looks into these older posts),
    1. do you have to use 'blue ray ' discs for burnig m2xxx files onto your discs for play back in a bd player?
from readin' a few posts I'm under the impression you don't have to. (Whatever's best monetarily.)
    thnx,

If you want to burn a demuxed "movie only" blu ray movie to a DL-DVD (BD-9) you will have to shrink it w/ BD Rebuilder first @ highest quality settings, which can take a day or two w/ older cpus, a nice quad will do it in a few hrs
