I have an AVI file that is a little over 2.3 gig and I would like to make it smaller. DVDShrink does not see the AVI file and I am unsure what else to try.

Xvid4PSP. However you need to work out exactly what you have, and what you want.

I installed this program but when I run it I get a error and it will not load my file. It tells me windows will look for a solution for the problem and then it closes.

Do you have the .net framework 3.0 installed? Xvid4PSP requires it to run.

Normally, however, to make it smaller (in file size), you're going to have to lose quality.

Run the video file through a utility like GSpot or MediaInfo and post the information here. In the case of GSpot, you can post a screenshot of the resulting window. Blank out the file and path names, if you prefer. Maybe we can see if there's something about the file that Xvid4PSP definitely won't like, or that you'll have problems with, in general.

Also, how do you want to make the video smaller? Recompress with a different codec? Lower the bitrate or resolution?

Unfortunately, "(program) has encountered an error and needs to close" and Windows searching for a solution are just standard Windows crash error messages, for the most part. I'm not even sure it DOES search for any kind of solution.

To me it sounds like you have other system problems - possibly a bad codec file or similar. Can you load any other videos ?

Have you tried re-installing it ?
