Is there any possibility to play one of these formats on this dvd player?
    Maybe with a modded firmware?

Nothing HD can actually be played using a DVD player. The best they can do is upconvert SD to HD resolution. Look elsewhere for an HD media player.

Actually, usually_quiet completely answered the question. MKV, MP4, and HD divx aren't supported on any DVD player unless explicitly stated. To my knowledge there aren't any DVD players that natively support those HD formats. However, maybe people have had luck playing high resolution avi's.

My Phillips 5990 supports MP4, but only if it's a DivX/Xvid video stream and MP3 audio stream muxed into an MP4 container. The DVD resolution limit still applies (in other words, you won't be able to play video above, say, 720x576). Supposedly, the 642 can play MP4s like the above, as well, but I haven't felt like burning a disc just to test it on mine. So, in theory, the 3962 should be able to play that kind of MP4 as well, though not any other kind.

No, there's no chance of MKV support, or most other types of MP4 (or at least h.264 decoding), even with different firmware. Most of the decoding is done by dedicated hardware, and the player has to actually have the hardware setup to use those other formats/codecs.

    Hi,

I had the same question on my mind and was expecting one of the DVD players to provide support for mp4 and MKV through USB but did not find any product so far.

However I came across a Media Player which supports almost all the formats you download from web. Its on sale on Amazon. Link is http://www.amazon.com/MASSCOOL-MP-1371RS-1080p-Player-Retail/dp/B002SZM2SI/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

    Another one is http://www.amazon.com/GSI-1080p-Multimedia-Enclosure-Player/dp/B005GQNFJQ/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_2_2

Please note that I am not associated /affiliated with any of these products or Amazon.

    Hope it helps.

Don't dig up old threads to add to them. The original poster never logged in again after Jan. 1, 2009.

There are other options available such as various Western Digital models that don't require someone to buy a used device.
