I tried doing a search but wasnt able to find exactly whay I wanted. I have an avi file and a .sub&.idx file. I just want to create on avi file with the subtitles burned. I was able to preview it in mencoder, but the final file dosnt have the subtitles in it after I encode.

    You have three options:
1/ Forget about the .idx/.sub, and find a matching .srt file on one of the subtitle search sites (1) (2).
2/ Put the AVI + .idx/.sub subtitles in a MKV container. If MKV isn't good enough for you (e.g. a stand-alone DVD/AVI player), then ffmpegX can transcode the MKV to AVI with burned-in subtitles, as BeardFan found out (1) (2).
3/ Or you can encode to DVD using the DVD mpeg2enc preset with Decode with mplayer activated. That seems to be the only setting that supports idx/sub for input in ffmpegX.
