If you have a Zune 30 - DO NOT use it today (12/31/2008) !!

There is a serious glitch in the software that will lock up Zune 30s on today's date - Microsoft knows about this issue and is working on a solution. It is unknown at this time whether the Zune 30s will work properly tomorrow.

Yep found out at work today. Bummer man....

Hopefully it's not bricked permanently. It boots to the zune logo and hangs before the menu loads.

On the other hand I wouldn't mind a voucher for the price I paid for the 30gb for a 80gb or 120gb as a replacement...... (I don't need the full price paid just the amount that I paid for my zune 30 to cover the cost of a 80 or 120)......

    Hey I can dream can't I????

    Hi guys,

I wanted to start a sticky thread to give you a place to discuss the issue with the Zune 30's freezing. Rather than hijacking other threads or creating tons of repeat threads, please post here if you want to discuss.

I will post any information I have in this thread as it becomes available. You can also monitor http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/default.htm for updates on the issue.

I can assure you that the team is working to understand and resolve the issue as soon as possible. My apologies to all of those that are affected by the problem. Thank you for your patience!

    [Update - 2:20pm PST]

    Hi guys,

I just got an update from the team that I want to share with you. Great news! It looks like this issue will resolve itself over the next 24 hours. Please read the response below. Thank you all for your extreme patience with this!

    -Matt

    =-=-=-=

Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you’re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device.

Customers can continue to stay informed via the support page on zune.net (zune.net/support).

We know this has been a big inconvenience to our customers and we are sorry for that, and want to thank them for their patience.

Q: Why is this issue isolated to the Zune 30 device?

It is a bug in a driver for a part that is only used in the Zune 30 device.

Q: What fixes or patches are you putting in place to resolve this situation?

This situation should remedy itself over the next 24 hours as the time flips to January 1st.

    Q: What’s the timeline on a fix?

The issue Zune 30GB customers are experiencing today will self resolve as time changes to January 1.

Q: Why did this occur at precisely 12:01 a.m. on December 31, 2008?

There is a bug in the internal clock driver causing the 30GB device to improperly handle the last day of a leap year.

Q: What is Zune doing to fix this issue?

    The issue should resolve itself.

Q: Are you sure that this won’t happen to all 80, 120 or other flash devices?

This issue is related to a part that is only used in Zune 30 devices.

Q: How many 30GB Zune devices are affected? How many Zune 30GB devices were sold?

All 30GB devices are potentially affected.

    Matt Akers
    Zune Product Team

I decided not to let the battery drain - I opened it and pulled the battery connector to reset the unit. Hopefully, when I turn it back on tomorrow afternoon it will be back in full service.

    Thanks number six!

That sounds good. So its not a z2k thing after all - its a leap bug.

Wasn't the clock a feature that was added with one of the updates? I don't remember the clock being on my 30gb when I bought it new in February.

I had drained the batter earlier today. I will turn it on and let it fully drain again. So I will also reconnect the zune to the marketplace to get my subs back in order.

Whew that was a relief they at least figured out the problem. Too bad they didn't know about it sooner and released a patch for it. THough I only connect my zune once a week at most to the net so that still might not have helped me.

The unit had an internal clock built in, but no user interface to view it - the new software just added that interface.

I read that the driver was written to look for 365 days in a year, but this year had 366 days - and the new software came out after February 29, 2008 - so it choked when it did not see January 1, 2009 - I just hope it does not blow up when they add the leap second at midnight :P . I guess that this could happen again in 2012 unless they fix it .

I haven't used my Zune in a while, but when I read about this problem - well - curiosity killed the cat, so I just HAD to turn it on to see

So number six did yours kick back to life yet?

Mine was completely drained yesterday so I have now plugged it into the computers usb port for charging. It is on the battery sign with the plug in the middle of it for charging.

Hopefully after it charges for a little it will be back to its old self. (this computer has the zune software on it)

    EDIT - It's alive!!!

Yep its back after getting it charged.

I discovered a new musician - ERIC JOHNSON - yeah I know he's been around since 86 but I never heard him before. I played his CLIFFS OF DOVER song on Guitar Hero 3. I love it! Now he's a bit like Eric Carmen on the songs with lyrics. That's not a bad thing. But I'd rather he was all musical like Satriani. But he's very good. I don't like the ones that edge on country but the pop and rock riffs are very good.

Hi Yoda - I just got home from work, turned on my Zune - All is well

I did not want to take a chance with the big battery sign, that is why I reset it yesterday - I don't trust these batteries to recover properly after a complete discharge

Microsoft is going to fix the clock glitch with the next software revision, so 2012 should be OK

I never heard of those musicians - I am stuck in the age of The Beatles, Billy Joel, etc. I lost all my kind of music after 1990. Now I have retreated into classical - I love violin and piano and harpsichord . What kind of music do they play? If it is my kind, then I will try to listen.

    And, HAPPY NEW YEAR
