Hi Folks --
Not really wise on these issues and hope I'm posting in the right forum, but can anyone tell me what I need to view avi's from my laptop (Ispiron 1150) to my television? The telly has composite, component, s-video and coaxial inputs, but the lappie has only the regular monitor cable output. I assume for a second monitor. I don't know where to look on the lappie to find out whether or not it supports what I'm trying to do.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

The joy of using a computer to play to your TV is that it is easier to get it to play everything.
A DVD player will not usually play H264 files, or HD or even WMV, althought the Philips 5990 series do.
Look at this:-

I personally do not use a computer (yet!) as it is an inelegant solution visually for me, I still burn to DVD and play the disc.
I have had too many hard drive failures over the years to trust them, and if a disc doesnt play at least you have only lost those files.
But then I am an archivist and keep everything I download ! -
For that laptop, VGA can be used for work presentations.
Get the Philips 5990 or 5992 for playing DVD and video files. The picture will be far superior.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Just out of interest, does a laptop with hdmi output give as a good a picture as a dvd player.
I am selling my oppo as the Philips 5990 is just as good on my 46inch W series Sony Bravia.PAL/NTSC problem solver.
