    am i missing a codec or something? what do i need?

    What is the audio codec? Identify it using mediainfo.

    And what is the video codec? I suspect it's a flv with h264 video.

    audio codec is: AAC LC

    video codec: AVC

    Yep, h264=avc.

    Tried latest avidemux build? http://avidemux.razorbyte.com.au/

    If that wont work you can use latest winff and reconvert to another format. Or avisynth with flv splitter. See https://forum.videohelp.com/topic359060.html?highlight=flv%20h264
