I wanted to bring a Clip from one of my favorite movies onto a Smartphone. I thought I could just bring the files into Premiere 2.0 and save out the clip I want. It seems that I can't bring DVD files into Premiere as is. So I am converting them first to an avi using DVDX. There has to be something out there that can do this more intuitively. I think I am just missing something simple but just can't put my finger on it.

When regularly backing up movies I have purchased I use DVDFab.

After I have the movie backed up to an avi what would I use to convert it to a format for my smartphone?

    Thanks,

    Bob

What smartphone? It might support avi divx/xvid with lower resolution. Use then dvdfab directly or autogk, fairuse wizard.

You should avoid a double conversion. Each time you encode, you will have a quality reduction. You should find a tool (there are many free ones) that you can use to convert directly from the original MPEG file to the format that you need for the smart phone.

One converter you can use use is Quick Media Converter

    >>What smartphone?<<

We are using a Blackberry Storm and a Palm LifeDrive.

    >>convert directly from the original MPEG file to the format that you need for the smart phone. <<

Are there any programs that will allow me to select a time in and time out so that I can covert only the clip I want and not the entire movie. I wasn't looking to encode the entire thing if I didn't have to. I was only looking to take a specific clip. Will Quick Media Converter give me that capability?

    Thanks,

    Bob

P.S. SCDVD - Do you know that song "Hello My Baby"?

You can use Mpg2Cut2 to cut the clip that you want to use in your MPEG file and then use Quick Media Converter to convert just that piece.

Sorry, I don't know that song. Why do you ask?

Why back, anther life time , there was a cartoon of a frog that would jump out of a shoe box doing a dance to the song. It was one on the great cartoons of all time. The frog had a top hat and cane. Brought back some good memories.
