I used to make DVD to avi backups with HandBrake, but wasn't happy with the speed and quality, so I tried out a similar way to encode my DVDs to avi like I'm encoding Blu-Rays to avi with Eac3to/VDubMod and found really good speed and quality.

    - Copy the DVD to the HDD with AnyDVD
    - Create one .mkv video file with the whole movie with eac3to like this: "eac3to 1.vob+2.vob+3.vob 2: Video.mkv"
    - Extract the preferred audio track with eac3to like this: "eac3to 1.vob+2.vob+3.vob 3: Audio.ac3"
    - Import these 2 files to VDubMod and encode it to XviD avi

As an optional step before encoding I create an avisynth (avs) file (instead of typing) to import in VDubMod with meGUI's avisynth creator to auto crop black area from the movie and resize if needed of the created mkv file that will be feeded to VDubMod with directshowsource.

That's also a good program but with VDubMod I can use the new version of the XviD Codec that's more multithread optimized giving me a faster encoding and eac3to handles well the AC3 audio streams removing dialog normalization, what I'm not sure of with autogk.
