I am running Vista Home Basic x64. I have about twenty avi files on my hard drive and usually when I click on the icon, Windows Media Player will open up and play the file with no problem.

But now, for some reason, when WMP starts playing the file, two flash player icons pop up in the system tray, one for audio and one for video. I'm pretty sure this is tied into Replay Media Catcher, which I had to reinstall yesterday. Before I did that I never had any icons come up.

But this just does not make sense. I mean, in theory, AVI and Flash should not be tied together unless there's some type of conversion that went on correct?

Also, though I'm not sure this matters, I did notice in "associations" that I have a reference to flv and the current default for that is FLV player.

I would try installing the latest version of Divx.

Flash? Do the icons more or less look like the image below?

If so, that's ffdshow, not Flash. Did you (or any programs you installed) install ffdshow, in that case?
