Moved to Australia recently from the UK..

Sincem oving herei have been with a router with my isp.
In the UK i was suing a normal ADSL modem with a dyanmic IP.
Isit possible to do the same out here without needing to contact my ISP?
Would a standard BT modem work with this internet would it automatically change to a dyanmic ip instead of being a fixed static ip?
If not what would i need to do to change to dynamic?

    Many thanks.

Dynamic versus static depends on your ISP and the plan you are on (my ISP has a mixture of dynamic and static plans). Would your BT modem work over here - probably not. It has top comply with local conditions and standards.

    Who is your provider ?

Depends on the isp you have chosen, very few offer static ip ... check with them to confirm.

You may find resetting the modem easier and then performing the setup once more ... au uses PPPoE/PPPoA (isp determined) 8/35

Shouldn't be any problem with bt modem, but if it supports adsl 2, better

    Hi,

thanks very much for your help, is much appreciated.

    My provider is Itel.

Are there modems that can be bought out here that will definately work?
I suppose if i was to buy a usb modem for this then, then it would sitll have the static ip.

Maybe you lot could help me actually.. the only reason i want dyanmic is becausei m having HUGE problems setting up my own ftp server using bullet proof ftp.
It seems theres so much involved trying to forward ports all the time i really dont understand it.
I was wondering if you could help me out properly sorting this issue out.
I want the ftp server to people can access it outside my LAN.
    cheers fellas...

I would have thought having a static IP would be the way to go for an FTP server. Dynamic IPs make it harder to find - unless, of course, that is what you want.

Port Forwarding is not difficult, and should only have to be set up once in your modem. Go to http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm find your modem, and then follow the guide for ftp
