AVI files scroll when played on TV

Some AVI files I have will play on my computer, and when I burn the AVI file onto a DVD, the DVD will play on my computer, but when I try to play the AVI file using my DVD player on my TV, the movie will play, but will scroll from top to bottom, as if there's something wrong with the "horizontal hold" on my TV. Sound is fine.
My DVD player is able to play AVI files, some of the AVI files I've burned will play okay, some will play but scroll (unwatchable).
The DVD player is a Panasonic DVD-S53, the DVD burner is an LG GSA-H55L.
I've been using imgburn to burn the files, tried Nero, same scrolling thing happens with Nero.
Tried some AVI to DVD converters, when I tried to play the converted movie on my TV either it wouldn't play or would still scroll...
Anyone know why some AVI files I burn onto a DVD will play okay on my computer, but will scroll when I play them on my TV? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

My bet is that if you examine the problem files in g-spot or mediainfo, you will find that they are running at 25 fps, which your player interprets as PAL. I also suspect that your player is capable of outputting PAL (which is a good thing), but your television is not capable of seeing a PAL signal correctly.

The short fix would be to tell your DVD player to output NTSC at all times, so you TV can see them without having problems. The cost of this might be some jerkiness on playback during zooms and pans.

The better fix is to get a multi-system capable TV so you can play anything.

The final option is to convert all the files to NTSC, however this takes time, will also produce jerkiness, and will reduce the quality of the files (or you could make sure you only download files that play at 23.976 or 29/970 fps)

You're right, the AVI files that play okay on my TV are running at 23.9 frames (NTSC files), the ones that play but scroll are 25 frames. I looked through the manual for my DVD player to see if there was anything about making the player output NTSC at all times, but couldn't find anything about that.
Don't really want to buy a new TV...
There doesn't seem to be any EASY and FREE program that'll convert the files into NTSC files (if there is, please, someone, let me know), so from now on I'll follow your last suggestion.

There are quite a few, however it will cost you in quality. Part of the issue is that to get to the correct framerate for NTSC you either have to drop one frame per second, which brings jerkiness to pans and zooms, or you have to add 4 frames per second, which brings blended frames and jerkiness. It is lose/lose.

I would try Xvid4PSP for the conversion. Load the video, choose AVI Hardware under Format, then click on Video->Interlace/Framerate. Change the output framerate to 23.976 fps and Framerate Converter to ConvertFPS, then click Apply, then OK (this is important - in Xvid4PSP you must apply the changes before you click OK or they do not take).

Give it a try and see if you are happy with the result. If not, try changing the Framerate Converter to MSU Framerate and try again.

You will not get a clean conversion. No matter what method you use there will be artifacts. You just have to find a method that produces a result you are happy to accept.

Buy a new DVD player like the Philips DVP-5990. It will play PAL DVD and 25 fps Dixv/Xvid AVI files on an NTSC TV with no problems.

That may make the video playable but the audio will get out of sync.

You're right, jagabo, the audio is out of sync. I hadn't tried watching the DVD beyond seeing if it scolled or not, but just tried watching it now (past the 20th Century Fox opening shot) and yes, when I watched the DVD until someone started talking, the sound was out of sync
I'm going to download Xvid4PSP that guns1inger wrote about in his reply and give it a try.

Mike_ - It is possible that your DVD player doesn't have any option to force video output to NTSC, but I would not give up on that yet. Check the setup menu and see if there is an option to change something under video output from MULTI or ANY to NTSC. If you really can't change the output to NTSC (this forces the player to convert everything to NTSC if necessary), I'd advise getting the player jagabo recommended. Do you really and truly want to waste your time converting AVI files all the time? Well, a lot of people place no value on their spare time, but personally I'd just get on with my life and buy the cheap Philips player rather than having to convert a bunch of AVI files to a different frame rate.

jman98, nope, my DVD player doesn't have an option to force video output to NTSC. I just looked through all of the setup options again, for video output there are only 2 options, Interlace and Progressive (doesn't matter what I have this set at, the PAL DVD still scrolls when I try to watch it). And there isn't anything anywhere else on the setup menu that will force the ouput to NTSC.
I did check out that Phillips DVD player that jagabo reccomended, but Amazon doesn't ship that to Canada (where I live). And Amazon doesn't have it on their Canadian website.

But I don't really need to buy a new DVD player, the one I have works perfectly well except for not being able to play PAL AVI files.
