  2. Hi.
I had a similar prob ( i think - you weren't that detailed with your problem - 'videos' =?divx ?mpeg, dark on a monitor or a tv out, etc...)

After doing a reinstall of windows i found that my DIVX films were dark. I spent ages trying to fiddle with my display settings and found the problem to be really simple and stupid!

In win dedia player click file - properties - advanced - select mpeg4decompressor and settings. You should see sliders for brightness, contrast colour etc... correct, apply and hey presto!

If your probs are not with divx then u need to be more specific.

  3. If you have an ATI video card:

Right click on your Desktop and select properties.
Click SETTINGS and click the ADVANCED tab under the resolution bar.
    Click the COLOR tab.

Here you can adjust the OVERLAY brightness the card uses to display
    MPEGS and such.

  4. I couldn't find any advanced settings in windows media player. I have the latest version. with the ATI video card, the controls wouldn't affect the video. and the problem is erratic; like before i came to check the message board video were playing fine. then i opened another video, played fine for a few seconds then it just got dark for no reason. the problem is with all videos -- mpeg, divx, etc. i was wondering if it was the codecs 'cause when i got virtualdub for the first time it said i had some hacked codecs and that it may be problematic. it was angelpotion video codec so i uninstalled it but then i couldn't even watch any videos so i just installed it again.

  5. This is a hard one.
If the whole of your whole computer output goes dark intermitently, not just when you are playing videos i think it may be a loose/defective connection. I got an extension lead for my monitor once and thought i may as well get the longer one (5 metres i think) as it was similarly priced to a shorter one. The output on my monitor was much darker ALL THE TIME. Have read since that vga signals ' don't travel well' down cables. Double check your lead - just a thought.

I have also read that the angelpotion codec should be avoided like the plague as it does nasty things to your registry, I would suggest uninstalling it, runing a reg cleaner program and just install the kristal codec pack and/or the nimo pack available in the tools section.

I would suggest you search this forun (or google) for details on removing the angelpotion codec as it is not straightforward if i remember correctly.
Remove it even if it is not the cause of your problems.

  6. Also ignore the warning that virtualdub gives about using divx type codecs, this is because they are hacked versions of microsoft codecs, so i think its more of a legal 'protection' that the message comes up.
Only the angepotion codec causes probs as far as i am aware.
