The new Samsung players appear to be locked and cannot be made region free.

Krispy Kritter is correct. Also note that while there were one or two BluRay players that could be made DVD region free with a hack that worked only on models not sold in the USA/Canada, no BluRay player that I know of currently has any hack to make it play BluRay discs from all 3 zones. I have seen some very expensive hardware hacked BluRay players for sale in the USA that can play zone A and B BluRay discs, but I have yet to see anything that can play BluRay discs from all 3 zones.

I'd like to buy one BD-P1500 (or any other player), but it is important to be able to watch zone 1 and 4 DVDs (I have several zpne 4). Is it true that it is impossible to do it with a BD-P1500 purchased in Canada? I am confused - I believe I read somewhere that the units sold in North America can play any zone but PAL (note that zone for DVDs are usually NTSC).

Doesn't seem to matter where you purchase the players. As noted above, all of the new Samsung players appear to be locked.

So simply purchase a quality region free player for DVD playback and a Blu-Ray player for BD discs.

Thank you. This is, probably, the best option. Have a great 2009!
