I'm coming from the land of standalone dvd recorders and have previously used dvd-ram as my archive medium.

Okay, so now I've moved over to my pc and burned a dvd-r using tmpgenc author 3.0. Since saving humongous avi files is not an option, can I use this same disc to reinput to tmpgenc 3.0 and burn another disc or individual tracks losslessly at a later time ? If I save a data disc of the video_ts files would that be any better ? Or is dvddecrypter the magic bullet ?

You can always perform a direct copy operation, which by definition is lossless. It's only when you compress that there is a likelihood of lossiness.

Your post is a bit hazy on what your objectives are. Is it to backup files, without the need to play in standalone DVD players? Is it to save space? If you provide a clearer explanation of what your goals are, you'll likely get more relevant answers.

Whoops, I guess a little more context would be helpful. I collect and trade rock video (promos, tv appearances and concerts). It would be nice to pick and choose individual clips across multiple discs to losslessly create compilation dvd-r's for trading.

So for example, if someone wants tracks 2 and 3 from disc one and track 8 from disc 4, I can create a new dvd-r without any further compression. I realize that new menus would need to be created, but that's okay.
