  1. I have a Samsung DVD recorder/player

Whenever I play a Double layer DVD ( burnt in my computer) Video it gets stuck
at the place where the second layer starts. However, it deosn't happen with a DVD /TV I have
. So I am looking to purchase another DVD player. How about Philips 5990?
. Does it play home burnt Double layer Videos.

    Please let me know

Well, all current Philips DVD players should play consumer burnable DL DVDs fine, but for best results you really need to use only Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. If you use any other type of DL disc, you are asking for problems. Verbatim is the ONLY manufacturer of reliable DL media and I strongly recommend that you use DVD+R DL and not DVD-R DL discs.

Some DVD players are known to have problems with all DL media, so it could be that your Samsung simply won't play any brand of DL disc. I have seen this before as one of my good friends has such a player. Philips players generally play everything OK, although my old DVP-642 doesn't play DVD-R DL discs very well, hence one of the reasons I recommend that you stick with DVD+R DL discs.

  4. Hi Folks

I just got myself a Philips DVP 5990 DVD Player. I think this is the most expensive of

the Philips players ( $54). Yes you can buy Philips players for as little as $34 ( different models) Boy! is it worth the money

It is the answer to my "playing back home burnt DVD DL discs"

    It works very well indeed.

Make sure you pick up a HDMI cable ( if you have a HMDI capable Large Screen TV)

The USB port is really great

It opens up a lot of possibilities

BTW I have used Sony DL DVD . It works fine too

Looks like Philips is like the old APEX. You can throw at it anything and it plays.

Maybe Philips may have licensed its name to Apex?

  5. You've only just bought it, so your recommendation is based on on what?, a couple of days use at best.. after you have had it for a few months you will have worked out the good and the bad.. doesnt do HD, doesnt do h264, a bit slow, no DTS decode, no MIR, no hard disk, usb port on front, doesnt play BR etc etc.
NB phillips makes no further DVD players, expects you to brush Teeth instead..

While I think RabidDog's comments could have been a little more tactful, there is a good point here. We see a lot of posts about how various players "play anything" and they don't.

Apex had no support at all in any model for:
    WMV
    H.264/X.264
    AAC audio
high def video of any kind
The vast majority of models didn't play Divx at all, but maybe by the time the last Apex players rolled off the assembly line they had 1 or 2 that would play it. Apex is long dead as a company because the CEO and founder had some tax issues with the Chinese government that he apparently was too stupid to solve in the normal way that business gets done in China, so they threw him in jail. He may still be in jail for all I know. There is no licensing of Apex players to Philips, nor is your suggestion of Philips licensing its name to Apex even possible since Apex is dead.

Your Philips model contains no support for:
    WMV
    H.264/X.264
    AAC audio
high def video of any kind

It does support Divx Ultra, which isn't bad, but in reality "plays anything" means it plays SOME Divx files, as long as they aren't in high def and don't use certain problematic encoding options like 3 warp points in GMC.
SVCD support in Philips is spotty at best, although admittedly SVCD is now a somewhat exotic format that you may not have had reason to deal with. Your Philips may be a fine player for what it is, but it hardly plays anything. My intention is not to criticize you, but to simply point out that perhaps you shouldn't really say that this player plays anything when it really does not.

I am helping my parents find a DVD player for their Samsung 720p TV. I think an upscaling player with HDMI output would be good, and the Philips DVP 5990 falls within their budget (under $70). I have some questions.

I have seen some complaints about the flimsy remote (especially the eject button), the tray, and resume play not working. Are the people complaining about this exaggerating?

As far as its faults go, if one is not an audiophile, wouldn't the manditory (for N. America) AC3 track suffice? They'll just be using it with the TV's speakers.

I am concerned about the quality of its upscaling and decoding and its ability to play discs that are in less than pristine condition since they are renting movies from a DVD vending machine. They will sometimes be using it to view photos too. With these requirements in mind are there better choices within this budget?

Well i have had a Philips DVP3962 1080i HDMI with upscaling for a couple of months now.

It has played literally 100's of xvids & has never choked yet.
VCD, SVCD, PHOTO disc's & all dvdr's i have played through it.

Not sure what RabidDog is talking about but mine plays DTS audio fine.

The thing i like is that it is easily region hacked and plays PAL disc's great!!

It does not have a USB port but that was not a requirement for me as i use DVD+RW's for a lot of xvids and just reuse my disc's.

    @ usually_quiet
If i throw in a dvd after a week and after many other dvd's/xvids have been played through it, it resumes right where i stopped watching it the week before.
Bad thing is, it does not resume on xvid/divx so i always have to FF to where i was at when i turned it off.

My remote is not flimsy at all.
The disc tray is not one of the thickest trays i have seen but not flimsy as any tray can be broken if bumped into walking by while it is open, although i have never broke one, they usually just close.

I have played xvids & dvdr's with both AC3 & mpg audio and all have sounded fine.

Mine is an older model number, i'm assuming, it is not on the WALMART website but the walmart by me has had a steady stock of them for at least the last 6 months.

    Still at $39.99 !!!

Works so nice my son ended up buying one for his room.

WALMART still has them on the website. A local store lists them in stock. I'll have to take Dad out to look at them. Thanks for the tip.

    Huh ??
They must have added them again.
I know they were on there a long time ago, but for a long time, every time i did a search for them they never came up.
    Just the $54.00 one.

huh ?? i just did a search on the walmart site and came up with nothing ??
    I see the DVP3982 for $49.00.

Yep, there it is in the dvd player section. I know they were gone from there before also but it did not come up in a search for me.

I noticed a couple of other players vanish from their site along with a receiver.
Wonder if they got lost during the holiday site update.

    Here's the link I found: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10378916&sourceid=150000000000000...i_sku=10378916

The same store has the DVP 5990 and the DVP 3962, so we'll look at both. But I think the $39 price on the DVP 3962 will be more attractive than the extra features offered by the DVP 5990.

What brand of and model of free standing DVD player that YOU HAVE HAD for some time and you are happy with

and about does what all you want that you would recommend?

Granted I have not had the unit for a long time

However I sure will let people know my experience after I have had it for some time

and after I have played DVDs on it

Compared to the Samsung recorder//player I have had for some time,

this is better. I do record on DLDVD a lot. Hence it is important that I have a player that doesn't

stop at the point where the layer flipping occurs.

I don't use any other format than XVid to play through my USB

I play the sound through TV not use DTS

I sure am interested in hearing about the

DVD player that you have and are happy with
