The Consumer Reports link is a good reference. Wikipedia also has a page that lists the featues of the various converter boxes at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_CECB_units

The Zenith DTT-901 seems to be very well liked by the people that bought one and is sold at several stores. Sears, K-Mart, Circuit City, and Radio Shack have all sold it. The Insignia CECB sold by Best Buy is essentially the same thing.

I have the Channel Master CM-7000 and the DISH DTVPal/TR40-CRA. The Channel Master has S-Video out, more sensitive tuning, and a better picture. The negatives are the fonts it uses for on-screen menus, the program guide, and closed captions, which are too small.

The DISH boxes have a much better, more extensive program guide, and the menus and closed captioning are quite legible. The picture is not as sharp as the Channel Master's, and the tuning is a little less sensitive, but both are still acceptable for my purposes. Unlike most boxes, it has event timers that could be used with a VCR, but unfortunately, the clock on the DISH boxes is frequently incorrect, so this feature is not as useful as I hoped it would be. (The clock is set automatically by DTV broadcast signals, which often have the wrong time, and there is no way to set the clock manually)
