I'm looking for video filter that accepts component inputs that will give me control over contrast, brightness, colour, and most importantly, luminance.

My last DVD player had a luminance setting, your could adjust the contrast without altering the colour. That player broke down and I can't find another.

Does anyone know where I can get something like this, simple and cheap?

What you are probably looking for is a 'proc amp'. Not likely too cheap for component use. From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Processing_amplifier You can also do a internet search and see what comes up.

Yeah, I found a few of those, they can cost thousands. I thought there should be cheaper ones?

This luminance setting, it's not just brightness, I could control the amount of white and black going into the display, meaning I could make even the cheapest LCD displays look fantastic without using too much contrast.

I though it'd be cool to be able to do that with any player.

    Thanks for the info.
