nope, i'm not kidding, the RIAA has decided to stop suing people who download music:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122966038836021137.html?mod=rss_whats_news_technology
and i know why they are going to stop suing and it's not because they realized that "copyright infringement" isn't exactly stealing, nor have they realized that you can't steal from a thief (the recording companies steal from their artists), it's because people have stopped using traditional p2p software, such as limewire and kazaa and have switched to torrents, which makes it much harder, if not impossible, to show that anyone has downloaded or uploaded anything, all you can definitely prove is that a given ip address either uploaded or downloaded a small portion of any given file.
the next time you download anything using a torrent, and for this discussion let's keep it unquestionably legal, say a linux distro, keep on eye on the ip's and the countries they originate from of the computers you are connected to, you will find you are downloading and uploading bits all over the world, on one particularly popular torrent i found inbound and outbound connections from china, japan, russia, south africa, france, canada, and israel.
the music companies are dinosaurs, the lawsuits were an attempt to somehow stay relevant but the fact of the matter is all the years of screwing over artists are slowly coming to an end as more and more artists use the internet to get their music directly to their fans and not have to sign onerous contracts that only benefit the corporate fat cats.

as for peerguardian, i do use it, the only thing is that it acts in a global fashion, meaning it acts like a firewall of sorts that does inhibit browsing certain sites, still i do tend to use it on a regular basis. -
Discussing politics and religion will get this thread locked. Fair warning.

@ deadrats
I agree, but words like "Jesus" are lately persona non grata on most of the forums (kinda like "Happy Holidays" with a Christmas Tree picture is OK, while "Merry Christmas" is a big NO-NO - even though no other religion uses xmas trees).
I would love to continue discussion with you, but then we would have to enter politics and religions... and honestly I hate politics
PeerGuardian can be easily stopped with 1 or 2 clicks if you want to temporarily disable it.
Also you don't have to block http - just have http traffic blocking disabled and you can browse anything, while the same addresses are still blocked for your utorrent... Give it a try, see its options. Im sure you'll find it useful.
Have a great weekend. -
the industry does rip off new artists and they usually work something like this:
a scout discovers a band that is performing their own songs that have some hit potential...and decide to sign them
dangling a mere $50K in front of starving artists usually does the trick...and they sign
the industry's goal is to make $300 million off the band in a matter of 3-5 years...and allows the band a profit of pennies on the album which could be significant if popular
when it's time to resign and if the band is a hit, they up their offer to $5-10 million over 3-5 years with a few more pennies on the album depending on sales
a lot of times, the original $50K is wasted...but you can see the return on the ones that make it
best bet would be to sign, let them promote you, save the pennies on the album, then if you become popular, drop them, make your own studio and album(s), then sell your already popular and recognized name and albums thru independent distributors
in effect, cutting out the middle man who's taking the elephant's share
the band may be suckered into resigning and since the industry already knows it's average lifespan, may control the band for most of it's profitable life...and making yet another $300 million along the way...money that the band could have made had they not resigned
IMO of course
