Hello, I'm encoding alot of music video dvds, promoes and stuff like that. The quality is usually not great but ok.. this is the encoding string I use.
    mencoder.exe" vid.vob -vf yadif=0,crop=688:352:16:62 -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=extreme -ovc x264 -x264encopts crf=25ubq=5:bframes=3:b_pyramid:weight_b:threads=autoass=1 -of lavf -lavfopts format=mp4 -o vid.mp4"

this usually give me ~60fps encoded and I'd say it's fairly fast. But I'd like some input and maybe tips of things I should try.. I'd would like more quality and I'd also like to know if this is very low quality in your eyes..
    thx

Drop the crf down to the 18 - 21 range and you should get closer to your source, but at a cost to speed. That said, anything that improves quality generally costs you in speed.

Beyond that I don't know enough about mencoder to help much.

okay, tried it, bigger files not that much quality gain I'd say, but I got no good way to compare the output (any tips? see video beside another?), how about -vf yadif vs pullup snad so on? and what would improve quality without making bigger files, just timeconsuming?

quality generally comes from bitrate (or lack thereof). The higher the bitrate, the better the quality (assuming comparison of the same good source), however higher bitrate means bigger file.

Unless your source has major noise issues or other problems which be fixed by filtering before encoding, there is little you can do to improve, and certainly not without getting bigger files.
