I currently have an HP1630n with this: (Info given by CPU-Z)
Processor(s)
Name AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
Code Name Windsor
Specification AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+
Package Socket AM2 (940)
Technology 90 nm
Mainboard Vendor ASUSTek Computer INC.
Mainboard Model NODUSM3
Chipset & Memory
Northbridge NVIDIA GeForce 6150 rev. A2
Southbridge NVIDIA nForce 410/430 MCP rev. A3
My question is what's the best processor I can upgrade to for this PC. Not going to be overclocking or anything. Also, would there be a list somewhere, where I can find a listing of processors that would work on this PC/board, so I could look into price comparisons online?

I'd start here: http://usa.asus.com/index.aspx
You'll have to open your PC up though because "NODUSM3" is not a valid model number for your mother board."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

Ok so I just used SIW program and it also listed the mobo as NODUSM3, but also gave me a Serial Number MS1C6AS24501464.
and also just got this from the HP site:
Motherboard Name: A8M2N-LA
HP/Compaq motherboard name: NodusM3-GL8E
I searched that asus site, but coudn't find anything under either name? What We Do In Life, Echoes In Eternity.... -
Most likely that's a custom MB made by Asus to HP specifications, so Asus wouldn't list it on their site. If you have a 2.4Ghz 4600+ Windsor in there at present, probably the fastest CPU would be the 3.2Ghz 6400+, but the 3.0Ghz 6000+ is cheaper and still should give you fair performance. Both are higher wattage CPUs, 125W compared to 89W for the 4600+. And they have twice the L2 Cache size: 2 x 1MB, compared to 2 x 512KB in a 4600+.
But either CPU may require a BIOS upgrade to function properly and may not be compatible. And your power supply would need to be sufficient for the increased wattage, along with the CPU cooling.
You might take a look at this link as it seems to be about upgrading the CPU on that MB: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/A8M2N-LA.html -
I just got a reply back from HP and they said "maximum of the Athlon64 X2 up to 5000+" So I can only go as high as the 5000, and not the 6400 or 6000. would it even be worth it to do the upgrade just to the 5000. It's not that I even really need to upgrade, but thought I would look to see if it was even an option that would increase the performances of my activities

Great idea bendix

In everyday use it wouldn't be noticeable. Even under load, say video encoding, the speed difference isn't enough to show big improvements.
