The atom is designed for lightweight netbooks, and isn't up to much more than browsing, email and the occasional word document. Go for a quad-core intel

  4. Any current single core CPU is sufficient if you have a graphics card that supports hardware decoding. Otherwise, any dual core C2D or A64 X2 is sufficient for software based decoding.

I'm not sure about the Atom 330. The 945 graphics probably does't have hardware h.265 and VC-1 decoding. But the dual core CPU should be able to handle it.

Guess not. Atom is usually paired with Intel Extremely Poor Graphics:

    And from the guys blog:

Can watch full 720p vids. Stutters on 1080p vids.
But it may depend on what decoders he is using (whether the decoder is single or multi threaded).

Yes, assuming you use a player that supports DXVA (the Windows API for hardware video decoding) and graphics drivers (DX9 and above) that support it. MPCHC supports DXVA.

want a really cheap upgrade that can definitely handle 1080p (i know because my other computer is the exact same thing)?

and buy some ram, 2 gigs of ddr2 800 will cost you about $50, so there you have it, for a touch over $200 you can build a nice little computer that can handle any everyday task, including gaming at reasonable resolutions and some light video editing/transcoding.

the nice thing about the above setup is that you can go to a quad core phenom with little problem if you so choose (i also have a similar setup with an ati video card and a phenom 9500) for a few bucks more.

or you could wait just a bit until amd releases their new dual core x2's (based on the current phenoms, supposed to be a good match performance wise with core 2's) or if you have the dough wait another month for the phenom 2, which is supposed to be able to give the new core i7's a run for the money.

but even if you're on a tight budget, for $200 the above listed pc is not bad at all, and like i said i have the exact same setup and it can play any 1080P movie i have thrown at it.

  9. I don't think VLC supports DXVA.

    ok thanks!!!

    I think core 2 it's best choice!!!

  11. I don't think VLC's h.264 decoder is multithreaded. If not, a dual (or more) core CPU may not get you smooth playback because the decoder will only use one core.

An Atom makes no sense, because even AMD have CnQ tech inside.

I'm a little late to this party, but you still need somewhat of a decent CPU for the decryption of the video...and the atom falls below this classification .
