  1. Is there any program that runs on the background and possibly cache video files with high bitrates so that they run smoother?

The reason i ask is cause i have a relatively old cpu 2.25 single core amd64 but i have 2 gigs of ram and maybe a cache saving application could make things better.

So far i have got to open task manager and terminate every process running on the background in order to run a 720p mkv, and i dont have plans to upgrade anytime soon.

I guess you have mkvs with h264 video? Then try a newer version of ffdshow or coreavc and play with Media Player Classic or Media Player Classic Home Cinema.

Caching wouldn't help, as the player would still have to play the cache. And assuming that it did, the video would play slowly (slow motion type affect) as your pc isn't fast enough to play in real time. The only solution is an updated player/codecs and/or a faster cpu.

yes x264 mkv. When i first installed the OS (Server 2003) they played fine but now that i' heavey on programs have to shut everything down in order to play such files.

The lightest players i use are media player classic vlcplayer and mplayer.

Does vlcplayer use coreavc or does it use internal codecs for h264 content?

Y do you thing that caching a litle portion ahead wouldnt work?

Caching still requires cpu processing power to play the file, only a better cpu will help in the end.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

  6. I did try the home cinema version of mpc + the latest coreavc and things are looking better. I even run a 720p file with firefox running. LAtely i wasnt able to do that.

I will keep testing and see if performance lives up though.

Thanx for recommending the latest coreavc i havent thought of that.
