he may have invented the thing but last I looked, producers are not fans
trekkie came of age with words like hippie, yuppie, bippie, hippy dippy, etc
fans have always dreaded the slur trekkie and perfer to be called trekkers
however, trekkie is so often used as a derrogatory, it has become part of our vocabulary
it's the frequency of usage that makes it into our dictionarys

Yes, The Ultimate Computer. But the question included "Who is Captain Dunsel?" The term"Captian Dunsel" was used by Commodore Wesley to refer to Captain James T. Kirk at the completion of the successful first "mock battle" test of the M5 computer. Spock then had to explain to McCoy that "dunsel" is a term used by midshipmen to refer to a part of a ship that serves no purpose. So Commodore Wesley reinforced the earlier comment made by the M5 computer when he was called "non-essential personnel".

Having said all that, I want to try to dispel the notion that all Trekkers can identify Episodes based on obscure references. That is actually a small subset of the community of which I am not a part. There are many Trekkers that couldn't identify an Episode by name even with the most obvious of clues, unless it happens to be one of their favorites.

  11. 1960s Star Trek for me; a proper adventure series.

I can remember seeing Encounter At Farpoint when ST:NG was first aired in the UK in 1987 and was so disappointed at how slow it was. In fact my recollection of the series were of endless stand-offs where nothing actually happened.
Also it did get quite annoying when Le Forge would save the day by re-writing the laws of physics - something Scotty never had to resort to. Maybe I should re-visit this to see if my memory is cheating me.

It did pick up a bit later; The Borg episodes were very good but I couldn't ever watch them without thinking of the Cybermen from Doctor Who (well I would).

You get an A+, Well done

I am also not part of that small subset either. I was not trying to go in that direction, that is why I gave a fairly high level reference from what I feel is one of the higher quality and more popular episodes

The original poster (OP), SanderMan was not banned.

A lot of people don't have a problem with it, and I can respect their enjoyment of these restorations and "upgrades", as well as their reasoning: its personal taste.
I've got know beaf with this, whatsoever.

But, it would have been more interesting to see member-contribution to a restoration project of this and other series; movies; etc done here. And from this perspective, it would have been enjoyable and appreciated to see this on these boards. After all, we did have one or two such restoration contributions: Star Wars, on laserdisc. It was not an all out full-fledge project or anything, but it was interesting just to see the attempts by our members. To me, it is more a fact of loyaty, group-wise. I don't know.

    Now, on another note..

What about that scene in the first TNG epidose ( anyone remember? ) where Dr. McCoy (Bones) was on the ship (think he was being given a tour of the next generation star ship, named, "enterprise" and in that seen he was basically telling the other mate that, (I think, and not in exact words) 'take care of this ship and she'll take care of you' or something like that. I thought it was nastalgically appealing to see'em in that shot--it was not much, maybe about 30 seconds or less, and you never saw'em again, ever. It must have been some sort of tribute or something, I don't know. But it was ok, seeing that part. But, I wondered (if that was dr. mccoy) why they included this into the episode. Anyone got any comments ?

Regarding the restorations to the series. I'm not sure that I am seeing them. I'm still on analog cabletv, and WPIX-11 has them on Saturday nights, at 11pm. I usually record (and capture them) every week. But, I sure would like to see if my cable provider is airing them or not, using a guage. Does anyone know the title to the one that the "machine" that eats up plannets ? I could use that as a gauge and see if I have the original theatricals or the new versions. I mean, I thought I was seeing them, but after reading this discussion, I'm not so sure. And I would prefer to keep the original theats if at all possible, while they last. After all, Feb/2009 is nearly around the corner and I'm not sure how that will effect me, digitally speaking. Anyways. Thanks.

I was just thinking, I can pop up a few pics of scenes and we can compare them.

The episode you are talking about is the one I referenced earlier - The Doomsday Machine.

"I loved the weapon in The Doomsday Machine - it was so simple, pure and mysterious in the way that it worked and looked - They destroyed that for me when they made it metallic and machine-like looking, no longer mysterious - it was now a machine."

The good thing about the TOS (and Enterprise) series is that they are both clean telecine. No edits or TEC (time expansion/compression) applied. These can be restored back to their orignal frame (film) rate.

But, the Voyager; DS9; and TNG; series were Time Compressed, (they took fields out) to fit within the timeslot, give or take, 45-50 minutes.

Also, with the TOS, they kept the original color levels and quality aspects, not like, what they did with the other franchises, they butchered them. They all look washed out and mpeg/dtc/etc artifacts.

Thanks for the title. I know it was something like that. And, I will keep my eye out for this episode in the comming weeks in hopes that it airs and I can post something up on it.

    In case anybody is interested..

Tonights STAR TREK (TOS) episode #18: "The Squire of Gothos"
Kirk challenges Trelane (William J. Campbell), ruler of the world Gothos, to a duel for the lives of the Enterprise crew.

    Next Saturdays episode: "Friday's Child"

If I remember right they were added as filler for the show. I think it was like they only had enough for a hour and a half and were ekking out a 2 hour pilot.

Also the nice touch was Kelley took the minimum salary for the episode. That was a generous give back to Paramount to not break the bank on his salary alone on the pilot

I think it was also another early olive branch for the original crew to the new crew. Remember Doohan and Nimoy eventually got on TNG and Shatner finally hit in on GENERATIONS.

Wasn't that Commander Koloth? The one DAX mentions in the DS9 TRIALS AND TRIBBILATIONS? Also was I seem to remember Koloth and other Klingons actually being on DS9 with DAX on a mission in the early seasons of DS9. Something about a blood feud with an albino Klingon who killed Curson (spelling?) Dax's god son??? Also who was that Klingon from that bunch that had recurring guest apperances that new Dax? I think he even came back when they had Ezri Dax on the last season or two.....

    yep...couldn't think of his name

    "My dear Captain Kirk..."
    "My dear Captain Koloth..."

When they discover the compartments filled with tribbles and Spock quotes how many there are, the redshirt in the background rolls his eyes...

I'm only familiar with the original series...the new graphics are great on a big set

@number six - ok which was the guy that kept coming back? Was it Kang? The guy that was drunk all the time? Wasn't he in that episode where the found Kahless' sword? Didn't he tell the kid who was related to the Duras' sisters in TNG? Then he followed them? (man where is all this coming from? I actually haven't watched much Star Trek in awhile - I just finished all ten seasons of Stargate SG1 on dvd earlier this year so I've been GATING instead of Trekking lately....).

You know what probably threw me with Ezri was didn't she come up in that three or four parter after Jadzia was killed off? I guess I figured Ezri was on more than one season....

Kang was in only 1 DS9 episode - Blood Oath

    Kor was in 3 episodes:

Blood Oath - with Jadzia Dax
The Sword of Kahless - with Jadzia Dax
Once More Unto the Breach - with Ezri Dax

Sadly, John Colicos died on March 6, 2000

Jadzia was killed off in the last episode of season 6 - Tears of the Prophet - she was killed by Gul Dukat while he was inhabited by a Pah-Wraith.

Ezri came in season 7 - the last season ( I really liked Jadzia, but Ezri was CUTE ).

I do not have all of this info in my head - I do know a lot of the more prominent info, but not all the little details. I know the most about The Original Series because I have watched it so many times over the years. I have watched all the other series, but I don't know them as well.

When it comes to answering questions or discussing things, I use my reference material. When it comes to a posted trivia question, I will use the knowledge in my head - I do not believe in cheating.

I tried your link - it did not work - please check it, I am intrigued by what they have in that forum.

Also, I do own The Original Series and TNG. I would like to get Voyager and DS9, but I can't justify the $ right now.
