  1. I have some DVD9 videos that I want to make backup copies and need to know which DVD software will do this the best. I have a burner capable of the dual (double) layer discs and have some DVD-R DL blank discs.

There are many threads here to assist you on this, a quick search will get you the info you need.

Generally speaking, if the DVD-9 vids have older copy protections, you can get away with ripping with DVD Decrypter. For DVD-9 vids with newer copy protections you'll need either, the free DVDFab HD Decrypter, or AnyDVD which is rather pricey. For a straight backup, I recommend ripping in ISO mode as it will maintain the original layer break postion exactly as it is on the original.

I think you'll be much better off using DVD+R DL discs rather than the DVD-R DL ones as they are far more compatible.

No matter which of the above mentioned programs you use to rip the your DVD-9's, the major constant is to be sure to use Verbatim (made in Singapore) DVD+R DL discs and use ImgBurn for burning, using anything other than Verbatim and ImgBurn is NOT recommended.

  4. I have an older program named Intevideo DVD Platinum, which, I believe, has been bought by someone else. It does support the DVD9 format, but wanted to know if there was a newer version or there was something else along those lines that would work. I have also heard of DVD-Cloner. Will any of these work as well as the ones already mentioned?

No, you are just courting trouble with any other software than what was mentioned. Listen to Baldrick or suffer the consequences. I might add that media is very important. For dual layer discs, ONLY use Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. Anything else will leave you scratching your head, wondering what went wrong.

  6. Thank you all for the help. That is why I left my question - because I knew I would get a straight answer and I will do the copies as suggested. Does anybody have a quality supplier of media? I have used allmediaoutlet.com before, but have read some bad things about them lately.

What country are you in? If in the US, what region? OfficeMax sell Verbatim discs retail. Staples probably does, too. Online, you can go with www.supermediastore.com. Outside the US, you'll have to seek someone else's advice on where to purchase media.

  8. I always wondered why people on here would say to rip DVD-9s into ISO files instead of into their original DVD-Video format... I never thought about that you can maintain the original layer break that way!

  9. I tried the DVD Fab Decrypter on my DVD9 video. It took 6 hours to rip it into an ISO file. Is this normal?
BTW, I have a fairly fast machine with 2 gigs of memory. CPU is an AMD Opeteron 170 dual core running at 2815 GHz.

I started the rip before bed and after 30 minutes it stalled at 41% complete. It finally must have continued, but took a total of 6 hours. Again, is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

For me, it usually takes less than 10 minutes to rip a DVD-9 with DVDFab HD Decrypter, but I never rip as an ISO file, since ImgBurn knows how to handle VIDEO_TS folders rather well. This day and age, with programs like ImgBurn, I frankly don't see the need to rip and burn ISOs. But that's just me.

  11. I have 5 DVD9 discs to copy, and for some reason, the first disc was a problem to rip. As I said in my earlier post, it took 6 hours. I tried this with a few pieces of software with the same results. However, that is not my next problem. I was able to rip all 5 into ISO files on my hard drive. I started with number 5 and burned it to a Verbatim DVD+R DL blank using ImgBurn. When I put the copy into my computer, I got the main menu and could play all the movies on the disc. But, when I put it into my DVD player, it just opens up the drive door and pushes it out. BTW - when I put the original #5 disc in the player, it works just fine. Anybody know what this means? Is there a copy protection that is doing this?

Is this is the first time you have tried playing a burned DL DVD? If so, maybe your DVD player can't read them. Not all are compatible with burned DL media, even if pressed DL discs play perfectly.

  13. It is a Philips DVDR-600-VR and the manufacture date is printed on the box as Sept 2005. Can I assume the problem is with the player? I left an email with Philips, but don't really expect a quick answer.

The DVD Player List here at VH says the Philps DVDR-600-VR won't play DVD+R DL
