Using hotmail invites problems

I have been a Hotmail user for many years. Unfortunately it is becoming more and more time consuming to do anything with hotmail. The window which displays the message contents has become too small. The same small window is used to display the contacts list. Nearly 40% of the whole window is taken up by all kinds of advertisement and useless information. Now I am getting ready to move to gmail and I need to export my contacts list, but every time I try to export the contacts and I get an error message. I wonder is there anybody else having this problem.

I haven't used hotmail for almost 10 years now. Even back then it was full of spam.
