I have a monitor with a dvi-d output and a video card with a dvi-i input, will a dvi-d cable work or do the monitor and card need to be the same?

Yep, you can use a dvi-d cable to connect from the dvi-i output to dvi-d.
DVI-I means that it supports both analog and digital output.
