Hello, I have always had 'eventual' success with subtitles and video files when have run into trouble in the past but this time I am truly stuck... I have an avi video and an srt subtitle file that will not work together... all other pairings of video/ subtitle files work on my computer, and I have tried the two on other machines and they dont work there either ... I have tried compressing the video both with divx and xvid but neither work... the VobSub loads in the systray and my media player hangs... once i remove the srt it plays fine. However i believe it is the video file at fault not the subtitle, because when I pair the subtitle up with another, random avi it works fine... I am using VobSub 2.39 and ffdshow.

The avi details are as follows:

    Frame size: 700x320
    Frame rate: 25fps
    Data rate: 659kbps
    Audio: mp3 48000hz Stereo 128kbps

Is there some sort of video file characteristics that must be adhered to for the subtitle to work? I have tried converting the subtitle file from srt to ass and sub but they do not work either. Any help with this would be most appreciated!

    Thanks.

  2. Try playing it with SMplayer or KMplayer or VLC, which do not rely on the same DirectVobSub system

Thanks, but I really want to be able to play the file in any program... I shall try it in those programs just to see, but as I said I think it is more of video file issue than my srt file... does anyone know of restrictions set by subtitles on the characteristics of video files (ie. frame size)

  4. Well you've tried everything already that I would have suggested

It might be a mod16 issue (i.e. 700 is not evenly divisible by 16); so you might try re-encoding & resizing to 704x320. You could test it by encoding the 1st minute in vdub, for example , and it would only take a minute to test it out.

Thanks that did the trick! I shall have to remember that mod16 issue in future! So let it be known subtitle files will only work with correctly sized video files...!!!
