Please forgive me for my ignorance, but I am having a lot of trouble converting rm files! I have installed ffmpegX, and the support I THINK I need, but still no luck. The files go through the conversion process but spit out a 0 KB file.
I am on a MAC PPC, OS 10.4.11 and have gotten my poor little brain confused tracking down forum info.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.

If you can't get it, Baldrick's suggestion of r7c worked for me...works for local files, too

But that's a Windows tool, though, isn't it?

Codec type mismatch for mapping #0.0 -> #0.0 -
You may have more than 1 problem. The logfile indicates that ffmpegx can't recognize the codecs in the sourcefile. If you drag the source into ffmpegx's window, I assume that it says "unrecognized" in the video (and maybe audio) pane(s). You may also have to select "invert mapping" in the audio page (the "codec mismatch" reference usually indicates the need for this).
Assuming that you've correctly installed "reallib" then the next thing is to verify that you are using only mencoder-based presets. Others (e.g., ffmpeg) won't work.
An earlier related thread on this may also provide you some hints: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic349046.html -
Thanks for your help. I installed the MPlayer OSX and tried to open my .rm file. It opens the window, plays the audio for a split second, then stops. Sorry again for being so clueless. THis is SO not my area of expertise!

That extensive log output unfortunately only says that mplayer had a problem. But you probably already figured that out when it didn't play the file.
First, did you read the posts in the thread I linked to? Before we can go on to possible next steps, you need to tell us what you have done so far. Don't make us try to read your mind.
Next, are you sure that the source file is intact? That is, are you able to play it with RealPlayer? If not, then there's no hope for ffmpegx.
Finally, what do you ultimately want as output? DVD? DivX? Something else? -
OK, here goes....
These are old .rm files from 2001. They play in RealPlayer, but don't look right — "snowy" and low-res. When I attempt to convert in ffmpegX and play through the app, they look fine, but have no sound.
I loaded ffmpegX, mplayer, mencoder, and realib. I have had trouble finding the right mpeg2enc file. Downloaded it from the site, but it's a 492 KB text file with .intel suffix. When I drag the .rm file into the app window (attached). It "creates" a zero KB file.
So I loaded MPlayer OSX 1.0 rc2 (which is listed as outdated, but the only Mac version I could find.) Here's what's in the folder:
AUTHORS.mplayer.rtf
AUTHORS.rtf
Copyright.rtf
Donate to MPlayerOSX
LICENSE.rtf
MPlayer OSX
mplayerhq.hu
MPlayer quits upon opening the .rm file.
I just want to convert these to a more usable format, like .mov or .mp4 for my website and pdf portfolio. THis all started when I realized that the .rm files look so bad. (They were OK back in 2001!)
I'm on a Power Mac G5 (PPC), OSX 10.4.11
Video card: ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
That should be the whole story. Please let me know if you need any more info. THANKS so much for trying to help!
Kathy

You have steadfastly ignored my pleas to help me help you by simply saying yes or no to the question of whether you have followed those instructions.
2) Conversion of a video into another format will generally make things look worse, not better. If you are converting from realmedia into mp4 in the belief that the video will magically improve in quality, you will be very disappointed. If you are performing the conversion for other reasons (eg., not requiring viewers to use RealPlayer), then ok, but be advised that the tradeoff is that the already-poor quality clips will look even worse when you're done. -
Sorry. Yes, I downloaded the Mac OSX PPC codec package from MPlayer since I'm not on an Intel-based system. I followed the directions for replacing the realib folder with the codecs folder (renamed realib) in the app support folder.
Maybe my rm files are screwy.
Thanks again for your help and patience. -
Did you really rename it as you've consistently (mis)spelled it -- realib? The correct spelling is reallib. If you've named the folder realib, that's going to be a problem -- the app expects to find a folder named reallib. Maybe that's your problem?

In reading over your posts, I note that you went to extra effort to avoid the .intel binaries. That may be part of your problem, although I am unsure of how the various versions of ffmpegx interact with various versions of binaries, and with various versions of hardware. But at least according to the ffmpegx website's instructions, you should install the .intel binaries (which are *universal* binaries, meaning that both ppc and intel hardware is supported). Perhaps following those instructions to the letter would be an advisable way to (re)start.

This note appears during the installation:
MPlayer has builtin support for the most common audio and video formats........ Please note that most codecs only work on Intel x86 compatible PCs.
That's why I didn't continue loading. Should I add these to my existing reallib? -
Tell you what: I have an older Mac at home that has successfully converted old rm files (probably of roughly the same vintage as yours). When I get home, I'll document what version of ffmpegx, binaries, etc. it has. Maybe you have to "go back in time" (revert to an older version of software) in order to do what you're trying to do. I've been hoping that others would pop in here and provide wisdom, but it appears that you're stuck with me for now. Poor you!
Please stay tuned. -
Thank you soooo much for taking so much time and energy on this. As I get deeper, I get more confused.
I really appreciate your help. -
For PowerPC, just get the reallib from the link provided on the ffmpegX website:
If there is no version for OSX available, then download the latest stable build of reallib from this link.
• Now decompress the package, and copy it into /Library/Application Support/ffmpegX
• You're done ! To test your reallibs install, open a RealVideo file in ffmpegX and click "Play". If you see the movie, then the install is successful.
The mplayer (lower case m, lower case p) that ffmpegX uses is a different one than the stand-alone GUI player app. But even that separate MPlayer (capital M, capital P) does not support RM out of the box. The codec packages from the MPlayer site are for additional codec support for the GUI player, which includes RealMedia. -
Thanks for trying to help me through this!
I have installed MPlayer OS X 1.0rc2 and the codec package Mac OS X PPC 20041107 from www.mplayerhq.hu.
I have put the MPlayer app folder in my main applications folder. Do I need to find the codecs folder and put it somewhere or is it installed automatically in the right place?
When I open my old .rm file in MPlayer, it stops just a split second into the video. In searching the MPlayer help, I found that I may "to use the command line."
------->To use the command line version of mplayer without any hussle, we suggest you create a link to the binary file contained in the MPlayer OSX.app bundle. To do that, just type the following into your terminal:
ln -s /Applications/MPlayer OSX.app/Contents/Resources/External_Binaries/mplayer.app/Contents/MacOS/mplayer /usr/local/bin/mplayer
This will create a symlink to the mplayer command line binary, and place it into /usr/local/bin. (You can place it anywhere you like, but traditionally, user made binaries, that are not part of the distribution are placed in /usr/local/bin)
But, of course, I don't know how to do this! : ) How do I type into my terminal on a mac?
Thanks,
Kathy -
Kathy,
I think you made things more complicated than it needs to be.
Forget about MPlayer OS X 1.0rc2 and the codec package Mac OS X PPC 20041107. Only the users of Intel Macs need to go the more complicated route of first installing a codec package for a different player before moving.
Just use the PPC reallib download that the developer of ffmpegX suggested. Download it, unzip it, move the folder as instructed and try to [Play] a .rm file from within ffmpegX. -
Oh, I did that in the first place. I think my files must be corrupt. They'll play from within ffmgpegX without sound. But they won't convert to another format.
Thank you all for your incredible patience and help!
And have a great holiday. -
Hi Kathy,
Then, I wonder if there might be a problem with your hard drive. It's a low probability that increases as each "standard" debugging step yields no fruit. I would fire up Disk Utility (it's a part of the standard OS install; look under Apps inside Utiliities or something like that) and do a quick disk test. Maybe the files are downloading fine, but they're being store/installed on a damaged portion of the disk.
You're to be commended for your persistence -- lesser souls would have thrown in the towel long ago!
