I am planning on adding an external Hard Disc Drive to my PS3 but I haven't been able to find any information on the maximum drive capacity that the PS3 will support. Specifically does anyone know if it will support a 1TB external drive? I know about the the 32 GB partition limit when formatting a FAT 32 drive which is required on a PS3. I will use the utility SwissKnife to partition and format the drive as a single FAT 32 partition. But can a PS3 recognize and use a 1TB external drive?

It's a good question. I did a quick search on the subject (not even close to being exhaustive) and didn't find anybody who'd used anything bigger than 160 GB. I found some debate on whether or not 7200 RPM drives were OK (the original drive runs at 5400). The problem you're going to potentially have with larger drives is cooling. Larger drives run hotter and I could see heat buildup being a big problem. Just something to consider.

As far as an external HD goes, as long as it's formated fat32, I don't how the size would make any difference. I'm using a 200gb with its own enclosure and power supply and it works fine. Additional info could probably be found at the Sony PS3 forum.
