Is there a way to capture HD on Windows XP, or is this an old, tired, hopeless topic?

It's certainly possible. However how you do it depends on a lot of factors. I use some drivers and record directly from my cable box via firewire and it works fine for me, but then again I just record a few shows from local broadcast and they aren't encrypted like HBO is.

Define "capture HD". From what ? Over what connection ?

I'm trying to capture HD video from a camcorder (Canon Vixia HV30) to my Windows XP Pro computer. I'm under the impression that this is not possible with XP, only Vista.

HV30 over Firewire (IEEE-1294) to HDVSplit is as simple as DV format.
It is true that XP Windows Movie Maker 2 doesn't support HDV but many other edit programs will.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I'm using Avid Media Composer on my XP machine. It supports HDV. At the time I purchased it, about 9 months ago, Avid recommended that it not be installed on a Vista machine. I also used the NLE that Mainconcept used to offer called Mainactor 5. It had HD support.

All the basic programs have "premium" versions that include support for HDV and some AVCHD. These run on XP or Vista.
Adobe Premiere Elements
Vegas Movie Studio
ULead/Corel Video Studio
Pinnacle Studio
All the "pro" versions now support HDV.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
