I have several xvid formats that I want to burn to DVD and watch on my divx player.

Sometimes the xvid jumps during playback or is not smooth. Does anyone the best settings to use when re-encoding for divx players?

What is the actual reason why some files dont play back smoothly?

Would the xvid being 23.976 cause this poor playback? Would I need to convert this to 25fps?

Just re-converting it now with VirtualDub.

I now acknowledge that QPEL, GMC and/or B-VOPs that cause the playback problems?

so I have unticked b-vops in vd, therre is no option about qpel or gmc, however the original file states that there is no qpel or gmc.

    cheers

  3. In Xvid QPEL and GMC are spelled out: Quarter Pixel, Global Motion Compensation. They are on the dialog you get when you press the "more..." button to the right of Profile @ Level on the main Xvid config dialog.

B-VOPs are usually only a problem with 2 or more B frames combined with packed bitstream. But some handheld devices can't handle B frame at all.

Other issues that might cause problems are too high bitrates, badly multiplexed audio and video, too large frames.

    This guide:

is mostly about an older Philips Divx/DVD player but much of it pertains to other players too.

  4. Using AutoGK with the ESS chipset option enabled will produce AVIs compatible with about all DVD/MPEG-4 players.

Thanks alot for the help! Trusty old VH !

Cheers jagabo for explaining it easier, all the options were unticked

Just have to do a few more before testing them out, will report back the results.

manono, I will take it onboard, but i prefer to use virtualdub if it works,

Well, AutoGK is a front end for a number of programs, including Virtual Dub Mod which does the actual video encoding and is pretty much the same as Virtual Dub as far as that goes. You'll notice that the page to which jagabo linked suggests using VDubMod for the reprocessing. The reason I suggested AutoGK is because you seemed unsure of the settings to get standalone DivX player compatibility (although jagabo's link solved that nicely), and without knowing very much about it you can easily use AutoGK. Given your stated level of knowledge, it might even do a better job.

Thanks again manono, I havent really been testing it.

Though I burnt a xivd off earlier (no qpel or gmc, however it had bvops every other frame? (in gspot i was like x-x-x-x-).

I tend to stay away from auto programs, I am fairly confident with video encoding though yes there is still more to learn

From this threads replies alone you can learn alot

  8. The B <--> B field in GSpot (next to the little VGS button) shows the max b-frame interval.

For existing xvid avi's you could try MPEG4 Modifier or AVI ReComp [re-encode option]

    Awesome! Thanks!

    I'm learning alot now

The tested file had 1 max b-frame (bvops?) - no gmc or qpel and it played pretty smooth on my dk digital, so i guess if it was 2 or 3 then maybe this would cause problems?

can you change the field order then if it was over 2 ?

You would have to test your player.

Field order is unrelated to b frames. Maybe you mean packed bitstream? As noted before, you can use Mpeg4Modifier to pack/unpack the bitstream.

You should check out the Divx test cd. It has lots of files you can use to test the capabilities of your player:
